Richland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 16,149. Its county seat is Olney, Illinois[1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 362 square miles (938 km²), of which, 360 square miles (933 km²) of it is land and 2 square miles (5 km²) of it (0.52%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 16,149 people, 6,660 households, and 4,535 families residing in the county. The population density was 45 people per square mile (17/km²). There were 7,468 housing units at an average density of 21 per square mile (8/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.16% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 34.4% were of German, 27.2% American, 10.7% English and 7.8% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 6,660 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.80% were married couples living together, 8.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% were non-families. 27.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,185, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $28,955 versus $19,693 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,847. About 9.80% of families and 12.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.60% of those under age 18 and 7.00% of those age 65 or over.
