Richard Spring

Richard John Grenville Spring (born 24 September 1946, South Africa) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He is Conservative Party Member of Parliament for West Suffolk, and was first elected in 1992.

He went to Rondebosch Boys' School in Cape Town and the University of Cape Town. Spring attended the Magdalen College, Cambridge and graduated with an MA in Economics. After university he joined the international financial services company, Merrill Lynch in 1971 working there for fifteen years, becoming a Vice-President in 1976. In 1986, Spring joined E F Hutton International Associates as joint Managing Director - they were taken over by Lehman Brothers, where as an Executive Director, he ran their US equities division Shearson Lehman Hutton. Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Spring was Managing Director of Furman Selz (now owned by ING), a Xerox subsidiary, running their European operations.

He contested Ashton-under-Lyne in 1983. He is currently a Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party responsible for business links in the City of London.

He married the Honourable Jane Henniker-Major in 1979 in Westminster. They have a son (born June 1987) and a daughter. They divorced in 1993.

Spring is a distant relative of the former Irish Tánaiste Dick Spring.
