Corduroy.

Corduroy were a four-piece acid jazz outfit based in London, formed around twins Ben Addison (drums/vocals) and Scott Addison (keyboards), who were previously in Sire Records act Boys Wonder (Scott had been guitarist with Boys Wonder, while Ben had been the lead vocalist).[1] Joining the twins in the band were Richard Searle and guitarist Simon Nelson-Smith. Richard Searle had been bass player with Doctor and the Medics, who topped the UK pop charts in 1986 with a cover version of "Spirit in the Sky". Searle had joined the Addison twins in the final incarnation of Boys Wonder before the band gradually evolved into Corduroy in 1991, initially forming for a one-off New Year's Eve party.

The self-dubbed "fabric four" primarily recorded in a "groovy film soundtrack" style and many of their tracks were instrumentals. On the release of their first album Dad Man Cat, Paul Moody wrote in the New Musical Express: “Whereas the rest of the Acid Jazz roster fidget around in a world of skinny ribbed roll-necks comparing sideburn growth, Corduroy manage to swagger through the same po-faced domain with a couldn’t-care-less braggadocio... Corduroy have got their collective tongue stuck firmly in someone else’s cheek here and it feels staggeringly good.”[2]

Releasing three eclectic albums on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz Records, they received heavy radio airplay for their single "Something In My Eye" in 1993, but national chart success evaded them, although several singles from their 1993 album High Havoc charted in the UK Top Ten Independent Charts.

They remained a very popular live attraction, particularly on the college circuit. They also gained a healthy following in Japan, making the first of several trips to the country in 1993, and the following year they recorded a live album, Quattro - Live In Japan. After leaving Acid Jazz Records they signed to Big Cat Records, releasing two further albums: The New You! (April 1997) and the Rob Playford-produced Clik! (August 1999), but were dropped shortly after, Corduroy to split in 2000.

B.U.M.

The Bohemian Underground Movement is an umbrella organisation, believed to be the brain child of Richard Searle, bass player from Doctor and the Medics, Corduroy and Wet Dog,for his various and mischievous pop art projects. The first B.U.M track - I'm Afraid Of The Man In The Pasty Shop, was recordred, as a joke, entirely over the phone from Cornwall, then mixed in the studio later. It features on Acid Jazz Records compilation -The New Testament Of Folk. AJXCD163. The name came from writing BUM in the sand for purile and mischievous effect.

There have been several releases mostly through Acid Jazz Records.

Acid Jazz Records.

Acid Jazz Records is a record label based in Bethnal Green, east London. It shares in common with labels such as Stax and Tamla Motown a musical genre type named after it. Radio and club DJ Ed Piller is credited with coining the phrase Acid Jazz in the late 1980s and formed the label with Giles Peterson.

The first single from Acid Jazz was Frederick Lies Still from Galliano and was followed by albums by individual bands such as the Brand New Heavies, New Jersey Kings, Mother Earth, the Sandals as well as the production of compilation albums such as the Totally Wired series, and special albums dedicated to jazz, dub or compilation albums with a focus on music emerging from a particular country (for example, Sweden). Acid Jazz as a label responded flexibly to developments occurring over the 1990s and released material covering jazz (Ed Jones, Ulf Sandberg), soul (Brand New Heavies, Rose Windross, D-Influence), jazz rap (Humble Souls, Sandals), retro-kitsch (Corduroy) and dub (Hazardous Dub Company). Despite releasing a number of Latin inspired albums, Snowboy produced a number of twelve inch singles reminiscent of 1970s soul, such as Lucky Fellow (with Noel Mckoy) and Girl Overboard (featuring Anna Ross).

More recently Lord Large have collaborated with northern soul singer Dean Parrish on the Paul Weller song Left Right and Centre. Featuring Steve Craddock on Guitar, from Ocean Colour Scene and Richard Searle, fromer bassist from Corduroy. Paul Weller also collaborated with Any Lewis on another Acid Jazz release called Are You Trying To Be Lonely? which reached the top 40 in the summer of 2007.

The label is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Ed Piller has a radio show on Q Radio called the Eddy Piller show..
