Richard Dowis (born 1930) is a writer and president of the Society for the Preservation of English Language and Literature (SPELL). This Waleska, Georgia resident authored The Lost Art of the Great Speech (1999, ISBN 0-8144-7054-8), a treatise for speechwriters. Dowis, along with Richard Lederer, authored Sleeping Dogs Don't Lay (and that's no lie) (1999, ISBN 0-312-26394-5), as well as The Write Way: The S.P.E.L.L. Guide to Real-Life Writing (1995, ISBN 0-671-52670-7) — which outlines the proper use of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style in the English language.
