Richard Cranwell

C. Richard Cranwell is the chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Cranwell was born in Ceredo-Kenova, West Virginia, on July 26, 1942. He received his B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1965, and his J.D. from the University of Richmond in 1968. Cranwell is admitted to practice law in Virginia.

Cranwell has represented the 14th District since 1972. He has served as House Majority Leader (September 19, 1991-January 12, 2000) and then as House Minority Leader (January 12, 2000-2001).

Cranwell was elected as party chair on June 18, 2005.

He is an active member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Academy of Rail Labor Attorneys, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the Roanoke County-Salem Bar Association.

Cranwell is a member of Vinton's Chamber of Commerce and its Lions Club. He is married and has six children.
