Ricardo Cabanas (born 20 April 1979 in Zürich) is a Swiss football (soccer) player who plays as a midfielder for Grasshoppers. He is of Galician descent.

Cabanas started his career with Grasshoppers Zürich and played there for several seasons before moving to Cologne. During this period, he also enjoyed a loan spell at Guingamp.

He is a member of the Switzerland national team and was called up to the squad which participated in the 2006 World Cup.

In June 2007, 1. FC Köln announced that Cabanas was to return to his previous club, Grasshoppers Zürich for an undisclosed fee.
Cabanas was a prolific scorer, which is even more impressive bearing in mind he played in central midfield. Some believe that Cabanas is one of the best ever players Switzerland has produced. He has also played once for the (non-official) Galicia national team.

[edit] Personal life

He is the son of Ricardo Cabanas Snr., who last played for SC Kriens in the 1980-1981 season. His brother Christian Cabanas also briefly played in the professional league. His cousin, Raúl Cabanas played with Ricardo at Grasshopper.
