Ribeira Grande de Santiago (Portuguese for "Great River" which it flows nearby) is a municipality located in Cape Verde, detached from the municipality of Praia in 2005. The municipality was first founded in the 16th century. Later, the importance of the city declined and the municipality was transferred to Praia. The old city of Ribeira Grande de Santiago is one of the oldest cities founded by Europeans in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its port was served for caravels which transported slaves from Africa and for other parts of the world mainly Europe and the Americas. The town of Ribeira Grande de Santiago of Cape Verde has the largest importance in history of humanity. The town has numerous protected significant buildings and ruins since the discovery of the Cape Verde Archipelago since 1460.
