From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Not to be confused with Riau Islands, a province.
The Riau Archipelago (Indonesian: Kepulauan Riau) is a group of islands within the Riau Islands Province in Indonesia, and located south of Singapore. The islands are home to the majority of the province's population, and include tourist areas. Historically they along with Singapore (Temasek) were under the Johore Sultanate before the split thru the Anglo-Dutch Treaty 1824 [1].
The main islands are Bintan, Batam, Rempang, Galang, Combol, Kundur, and Karimun. Tanjung Pinang located on Bintan is the provincial capital.
High speed ferry services exist to the archipelago of the south, Lingga Islands (Kepulauan Lingga).
