While setting up "Lord Lonsdale's ninepins", I've found one I can't place: Col. James Lowther (1753–1837), MP for Westmorland 1775–1812 and Appleby 1812–1818, returned for Haslemere 1790 but preferred to sit for Westmorland. Afraid not. I have been tackling it from the parliamentary end, where I have most of the relevant reference books, and have been meaning to chase up the odds and ends of who is who later when it isn't immediately obvious. But I'll see if I can find out.Rgmmortimore 20:37, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
- I've been able to find him. He was, in fact, quite a distant relative, the fourth cousin of Lord Lonsdale. He was the great-great-grandson of Lancelot Lowther, Rector of Long Marston and son of Sir Christopher Lowther (1557-1617). Lancelot's descendants, the Lowthers of Colby Leathes, were an obscure cadet branch, many of whom became clergy and occupied living controlled by the main branch of the family. Other than Col. James, the only other member of note I can find is his grandson William Henry Lowther, active during the Indian Mutiny and retired as a major-general, and perhaps his grandson Anthony William Lowther, architect and antiquarian. Thanks. I had that from a contemporary source, I think, but probably not reliable on terminology. I guess on reflection there would have been a letters patent to certify the change made by royal license? Rgmmortimore 18:30, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Only Leigh Rayment [[1]], but he's generally reliable - lists a Narcissus Luttrell as MP for Bossiney 1679-81, and the birth and death dates match - there can't be two of them! Found him while setting up the MPs' list for Bossiney. Rgmmortimore 18:22, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rgmmortimore, thanks for filling in the rest of the electoral career of Joseph Compton-Rickett, for whom I had listed only constituency. One small thing, though: according to Wikipedia:Guide to layout#Standard_appendices_and_descriptions, ll succession boxes and navigational footers should go at the very end of the article, following the last appendix section, but preceding the "categories and interwiki links" ... so I moved the succession box back below the sources section.
- Thanks; in that case I suppose I will have to follow the house style. However, it ought perhaps to be reviewed - the material in the succession boxes is just as dependent on its sources and needing references as everything else in the article (and frequently includes details not spelled out in full in the text). Essentially it is a part of the article in a sense that categories, stub tags and so on are not.
Also, did you know that Category:Members of the United Kingdom Parliament from English constituencies had been renamed to Category:Members of the United Kingdom Parliament for English constituencies? The other national sub-categories of UK MPs were also renamed, to Category:Members of the United Kingdom Parliament for Scottish constituencies etc. The old names still exist (for now) as category redirects, but articles won't be moved across until the bot does one of its infrequent runs or someone moves them manually. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
