[edit] KCSS-FM -> KCSS page move

Hi there. I was curious why this move was made. The KCSS page has existed since late September 2006 as a redirect to King City Secondary School. On October 31, 2007, user Mstie3kmst over-wrote KCSS with an article about the station, then created a nearly identical KCSS-FM, and finally redirected KCSS to the new page. It was then listed on Requested moves as an "uncontroversial move" since it redirected to the station article. (See this)

The correct action, in my opinion, would have been to change KCSS so that instead of redirecting to the school, it would be a dab page listing both entries. I'm going to undo the page move, and unwind the merged histories. I'll also start a discussion on the WP:RM talk page so such entries aren't added as uncontroversial in the future. [edit] karmichael hunt pics

Thanks for the request, I was going to reply on the FAC page, but it was archived and didn't know whether to contact you or not. I will try and follow up on the issues. I will try and contact the copyright holder to explicitly say he releases the picture. But is is quite possible (and in my opinion - likely) that the copyright holder has left Flickr and unable to contact.

If so, or he refuses to gives the infomation. I can also revert to Image:Karmichael Hunt.jpg, which is free but is low resolution, so dosen't give a better understanding.

I don't want to lose this to FA, after all the work, for such a simple thing. I do agree that there is a difference between images 2 & 3.  SpecialWindler talk (currently offline)  09:11, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

The copyright holder has given me permission via FlickrMail, explicitly. I have updated the image summary page. May I ask you then to remove or archive the confirmation on the "Possible unfree images" page.  SpecialWindler talk (currently offline)  08:55, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Roberternestvinson.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Roberternestvinson.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr If you've written a quality article... 16:11, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Strange occurrence

When the article Leon County, Florida is pulled up, at least half is missing from "Voting trends" on down. I tried in two browsers - a glitch? When I go to update info by clicking edit, it's all there. I just can't figure this out. Noles1984 (talk) 17:55, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure it was a messed up reference tag; it should be <ref>sdfsdf</ref>, not <ref>sdfsdf<ref/>. -- RG2 18:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lorelei7 images

I am glad to tell you that Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion/2007_October_21#Lorelei7_images that you started is closed with these images kept. I have transwikied them to Commons with the OTRS having confirmed the copyright permission. Because no OTRS volunteer closed that discussion, I closed it when receiving the reply from permissions-commons at wikimedia dot org. Nice to administer this great site with you.--Jusjih (talk) 04:15, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Larryfaulkner.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Larryfaulkner.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. High on a tree 17:16, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect of Delta Air Lines (Former destinations)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Delta Air Lines (Former destinations), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Delta Air Lines (Former destinations) is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Delta Air Lines (Former destinations), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Adm problem

Hey RG2... I had Administrator Rdsmith4 delete the logo Image:Noles1984.gif from my user pages which I created. I'm just a little befuddled by this. You and I some time ago agreed that use of FSU's seal was not allowed as part of my creation so I removed it. I recreated a new user logo incorporating a helmet which I created using Paint Shop. I've also noticed that the same helmet I created was deleted from use in user boxes. So, I'm just sitting here kind of confused. I just want a reason why these were deleted. Noles1984 (talk) 20:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Because the helmet is copyright Florida State University. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:40, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
If I remember correctly, at the time, many people believed that works by the state of Florida were in the public domain, and given that consensus, Swatjester (again, if I remember correctly) and I concluded it ought to be OK. However, we do not have any U.S. state-based public domain image tags anymore, as it appears that all U.S. states still place some form of restriction on their works.
So, the image is non-free and under copyright. That means you can't copy it, but that also means you can't create your own copies or derivatives of it, either. -- RG2 21:11, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kenjenkins4x15.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Kenjenkins4x15.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 00:51, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nancy Reagan protection

Maybe you can help me. There is rampant vandalism, POV edits, and non-MOS edits being made to Nancy Reagan and my request for protection was declined. The vandalism has only worsened. I revert this anon one more time it will be 3RR. Please help out. Thanks, Happyme22 (talk) 07:53, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll keep an eye on it, but FAs currently on the Main Page are rarely protected. Admittedly, I'm not sure how wise this policy is. -- RG2 10:09, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lots of photos

You have nominated for deletion several photos and images. I will not oppose you deleting obvious copyright violations (but not images where you speculate they are violations - let me investigate first). Other images were removed from articles and are thus orphans, until at least I pursuade others to reinsert them back in (it would have been easier if you didn't nominate so many at one time -especially over the Xmas break!) As for the bus in the reservoir? I think I uploaded that by mistake! Kransky (talk) 00:53, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

There's a grace period after a deletion nomination, and I can always undelete an image myself if a mistake was made. But anyway, to summarize, I guess the ones that aren't obvious copyright violations (save for the bus in the reservoir) are:
  • Image:North Korean embassy in Ulan Bator.jpg and Image:Indian HC in Canberra.jpg – We'll need to verify the sources for these images if they are to be kept. Rarely are Flickr images licensed under the GFDL, anyway, so that's another sign something's fishy.
Ok, support deletion. I know I can find a licenced photo for the Indian HC. NK might be harder Kransky (talk) 11:14, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Image:PittRail.PNG – You replaced this with what seems to be a more complete map, Image:PittRail2.PNG, here. Is the original image worth keeping? If it's potentially useful, but not needed for Wikipedia, you might want to consider uploading it to the Commons.
Ok, support deletion. Kransky (talk) 11:14, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
-- RG2 01:18, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, oppose deletion. I might reinclude it in, later. Kransky (talk) 11:14, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
OK, I've withdrawn these from consideration. Thanks for the reply. -- RG2 21:59, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your edit (Warning: WP:POINT)

The second part of this edit, coming as it did in the middle of a heated discussion about a block, was unhelpful and a breach of the injunction "do not disrupt Wikipedia to make a point".

You knew it was unlikely to help sort the matter out in any meaningful way, and also that the issue was not "trolls" but a breach of an arbcom ruling, and yet posted it regardless.

The rules on manner of speech exist to help communication. There is nothing that canot be achieved with incivility that cannot equally be achieved civilly. The latter is what is being asked. As you can see from the user's own page, it is perfectly possible to deal firmly with a breach of norms (including if relevant any "trolling", "fringe pushing" or "disruption") both civilly and effectively. It also makes it a lot easier. FT2 (Talk | email) 05:36, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

A lecture on policy? What a crock. (And since it seems to be necessary these days: Your lecture is a crock, not you.) I, along with Raymond arritt [1] and Fyslee [2], disagree with your assessment of my edit, as it indeed describes how the system works around here when it comes to junk science topics. You'd have to be blind not to see that. But I won't press the issue, either. -- RG2 06:27, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Sad but true. Every time some fringe subject is subtly rewritten to sound as if it's "the subject of controversy within science" rather than the rejected and unsupported concept that it actually is, the encylopedia dies a little. WP has become the premiere, cost-free opportunity for the fringe to lift itself from the bottom of the search engine pile and gain instant visibility and credibility. I've observed fringe-pusher accounts increase over the last year, and some have learned to skillfully play the system against itself. I'm disappointed that a magnificently productive contributor like SA is unable to check his more immoderate outbursts. But I'm more disappointed that the new emphasis on WP:CIV has created somewhat of a straightjacket that discourages spades being called spades and enforces a climate where everybody is compelled to act like pollyanna -- the classical naïve optimist who always expects people to act decently, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Very discouraging. In the limited time I have for Wikipedia, I'll stick to improving low-traffic noncontroversial technical articles. - LuckyLouie (talk) 19:24, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Reply!

Hello RG2. Thank you for your note on my talk page. The problem with some of the ArbCom members is that they think the supporters of pseudoscience and the opponents of pseudoscience are 'equal'. In the name of NPOV, they are willing to compromise the truth. Pseudoscience is false. And, that's not POV, that a fact. It is as simple as that! The comment on your talk page by FT2 was unfair. I think the opponents of pseudoscience should work together and help each other. That will benefit Wikipedia. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 08:58, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
