Aaron Pollard and Stephen Lawson

TRANSMEDIA VIDEO CABRET DUO

MONTREAL CANADA

Besides doomed divines, other theatrical spirits conjured up include East Village performance artist Jack Smith, the late Charles Ludlam (founder of NYC's Ridiculous Theatre), even Canada's own Tanya Mars. At its best, camp exposes the questionable nature of gender, class, and race, while also creating empathy for its subjects. This is very much the territory that Lawson and Pollard travel… Andy Fabo, LOLA Magazine

Together, Lawson and Pollard, under the moniker of 2boys.tv and sometimes even as their alter-egos Gigi L’Amour and Pipi Douleur, create and tour multimedia performance pieces that often incorporate video projections, soundscapes, found and original music scores, transgendered apparitions, outrageous (sometimes sculptural) costume, props, vocal/textual works, and the art of lip-sync. Based in Montréal, CANADA, the duo has also produced several video art pieces (including Occupée [2004], Something Old… [2003], Teddy Bear’s Picnic [2002]) Their videos and trans-disciplinary performance works have been presented in clubs, galleries, theatres and cabarets across Canada (Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Vancouver) as well as in New York City, Milan, Madrid and Barcelona.

[edit] 2boys.tv - Artists’ statement

Under the moniker of 2boys.tv we create collaborative, trans-disciplinary artworks that at their core explore the intersection of illusion, imitation and authenticity within metaphorical, metaphysical and technological projected environments. Expressing our current political obsessions in subversive and amusing formats is key to our practice as we search for ways to infuse our messages with passion and the shameless desire for the emancipation of the powerless and displaced among us. Traversing the territories of camp and cross-gender characterization within our work has led us to question the class divide, to wonder aloud upon the panoply of sexual identities and to celebrate the puzzled and perplexed. In contrast to our contemporary fixation with modern iconic commercial celebrity culture we look to the past to identify with the forgotten divines, allowing the echoes of their voices to resonate and remind. Although we freely employ technologies within the creation and presentation of our artworks we also continually search for an “economy of means”, striving for a sustainable approach which respects our often limited resources and d.i.y.(“do-it-yourself”) methodologies.

[edit] Stephen Lawson, biography

Since 1988, Stephen has been considered an artistic chameleon, repeatedly traversing the discipline defined boundaries of theatre, music, television/radio, print and video. Upon graduating from the acting program of the National Theatre School of Canada he became a co-founder of the celebrated Winnipeg-based performance troupe PRIMUS (1989-1998) which created/toured numerous original productions, taught workshops and carried out artistic exchanges (professional and community based) internationally. For several years Stephen coordinated and participated in an annual environmental theatre production in the small agricultural village of Nocelle, Italy which celebrated and archived the community’s unique stories and traditions. His work as a director has been primarily focused on large scale contemporary music pieces (choral and orchestral) including having directed the premiere of an outdoor opera by acclaimed composer R. Murray Shaffer. He has produced several video art collaborations which have been screened internationally and his work with the much-admired Canadian performance artist Lorri Millan is in the permanent collection of the National Art Gallery. Stephen has developed cultural commentary work for print (magazine and newspaper), radio (documentary formats), and television (twice having filed international reports for the CBC on Canada’s participation at the Venice Biennale.) He has held various positions in the television industry including having co-developed an original series (Magnificent Obsessions) for the Life Network and he has also worked as a director, editor and project manager in the milieu of on-line education (eConcordia and Oboro-U). Stephen moved to Montreal in 2001 and since 2002 he has been collaborating with multidisciplinary artist Aaron Pollard (2boys.tv) creating and touring transmedia performances and videos throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe.
