[edit] 65.182.172.* is back

Hi - sorry for not responding sooner, I've been away from Wikipedia for a while. Have you gotten any kind of admin. feedback yet? This is the first time I've ever had to deal with true jackass of an 'editor', and I have to say I'm not too impressed with Wikipedia's ability to deal with him. I won't be able to participate much for the next couple of days, either. By the way, my knowledge of this subject is basically zero; my main interest is that the article conform to Wikipedia standards, which (because of 65.182.172.*'s POV writing style and complete lack of sourcing) it's not. --Dcfleck 12:33, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

It looks like some other users have gotten fed up with this anonymous user as well: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/65.182.172.x. You might want to add your own opinions here. --Dcfleck 13:50, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I see that. What am I supposed to do with it? Reub2000 17:08, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:CityOfNewOrleansInMephis.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:CityOfNewOrleansInMephis.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 09:30, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Awesome job!

I must say, awesome job with the seasonal track maps you made. They look amazing. The NHC track map looks ugly, but using the google maps is a great move. --Hurricanehink (talk) 13:47, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Maps are generated with this, and the map is this one.Reub2000 13:52, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hurricane track maps

Good job on making these up, however there are some issues. I've done some needed recoding to a locally held version of the program, but haven't uploaded it (due to svn being read-only or some nonsense...). If you want I can email you the diffs of the modified source so you can recompile to take into account the changes. The changes are needed as the colors in the source you have are obsolete - the WikiProject updated the colors a long time back, but did not update the source. And a couple other things can you upload the images to Commons instead of the english Wikipedia in future, and use the {{hurricane auto track map}} template as the image description. That will make housekeeping tasks much simpler (and consistent with all the other images). Thanks!--Nilfanion (talk) 00:02, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I have uploaded the patch to the gna site, available here, please download it and recompile your version before you upload more files. The color scheme has not been changed in the track map program due to inertia on that, see the initial discussion on the issue Talk:2005 Atlantic hurricane season statistics/Colors. I had to revert your upload to Commons:Image:Cindy 2005 track.png a couple of days ago for that reason. Also can you upload the images to Commons and not to Wikipedia, where the Category contains well over 1000 tracks.--Nilfanion (talk)
Bud, Carlotta, and Daniel are now on Commons. Reub2000 15:47, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Just so you know the correct syntax for the template, Hurricane Katrina's is {{hurricane auto track map|type=Hurricane|name=Katrina (2005)|source=NHC}}. Good job on uploading those, are you any good at C programming? It would be nice if we could use sources like the JTWC directly. (Here's an example of the format.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:16, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
WPAC track maps from 1949 are up on svn in a file called tracks-data/wpac.txt. I do however know basic C. Reub2000 16:45, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Yep, good idea, I'll send that off to you later. We have to be a little careful about forking, but if we treat Jdorje's version as "stable" and yours as "unstable" we should be fine I think. Then when he becomes active again we can merge the content back. You doing the active storm tracks and me focussing on the older storms seems like a reasonable divison of labour.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:03, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I think it's more about having a place to store our changes until Jdorje commits out changes. Reub2000 12:58, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Yep, true and to make sure us two as the active ones can share the data effectively.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:53, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, I will let you know as soon as I upload it. I can't get it just yet - your site seems to be down...--Nilfanion (talk) 19:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
My internet connection works for me. Don't expect it to too reliable as it is hosted on an ADSL connection.Reub2000 20:15, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Its up, I only committed the revised colors for now (theres some other stuff I'm working on).--Nilfanion (talk) 22:47, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] gna svn

Well, I think I've got the SSH working, but I'm not sure how I actually am supposed to commit stuff - so I don't know if I've got the SSH right or not... Do you know how to commit stuff?--Nilfanion (talk) 23:42, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

No not at the moment. I've just got sidetracked by half a million other things...Nilfanion (talk) 22:40, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually I know the best way to do this. Assume I'm a total idiot (I'm not but if you do I'm sure to get it right). :P I've know that the GNA server has my key correctly stored, but I'm not sure how to use it. If I just run the svn ci command I get a read-only error, so presumably I need to get the SSH authenication done first. As an example say I want to upload an updated storms.pl. What commands do I need to use, first to get the SSH working and then to update the file?--Nilfanion (talk) 11:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yep, was a simple mistake - didn't think to check out over SSH... Thanks for that, got it working now :) Oh and enjoy your trip.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:52, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Track maps

The key problem I have with "active" track maps are two things.

  1. Wiki bandwith. You have to update them every advisory, and that eats up space on Wikipedia.
  2. The more important one - extraneous images. Take for example One-C/Ioke. There's now two images for it, and One-C, as far as I can see, has not been tagged for deletion. Again, this eats up space on Wikipedia.

Doing just one "final" track map solves both problems, and at most will only be updated once or twice to accomodate tropical cyclone reports. – Chacor 09:45, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

The JTWC does not keep an archive. However numerous sites store them. UNISYS is probablt the easiest [1], but it stores all information its a little on the tedious side. I agree with Chacor here for the most part, its probably not worth updating the track every advisory, the NHC forecast track is better suited to live storms; and there is no need to have half a million versions of the tracks (once uploaded they stay in existence). IMO, times to update a track are: After dissipation and after TCR. Oh and a number of unusual circumstances (but not every 6 hours). That said Ioke should be updated now it looks silly with an incomplete track.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh - there is an error in your track for Ioke. Point 16 is incorrect (when it is a Cat 2) that NE jog would never have happened.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:23, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

I noticed you created the Commons: tracks as soon as the TD forms. However, this means there are lots of superfluous tracks hanging around on commons Image:One-C 2006 track.png and Image:Three 2006 track.png for example. I've nominated them all for deletion on Commons, could you please comment at Commons:Commons:Deletion requests#Redundant hurricane tracks. Thanks.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:19, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I've removed the link you added to the Kristy section. My thoughts are that since John, Ioke and Ernesto all havee active track maps, you might as well upload Kristy's. – Chacor 12:42, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Please update Kristy, it's been over 72 hours since the last update. – Chacor 06:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
