Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix is a 2001 survival horror video game developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. Fear Effect 2 is a prequel chronicling the events that would eventually lead to the plot in Fear Effect. The game gained some notoriety for a suggestive ad campaign hinting at the sexually-charged lesbian relationship between the two female protagonists, as well as making that relationship a central element in the game's story.

[edit] Story
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix begins in Hong Kong, circa 2048. In events taking place immediately before the first game, the player delves into the colorful histories of the original cast of three mercenaries - and newcomer Rain Qin - as well as the extraordinary circumstances that brought them together. Their mission: to bring back the kidnapped daughter of a powerful Chinese executive. In the aftermath of the onset of a terrible genetic malady, biological theft and terrorism are big business. The adventure takes players through the chaotic alternate reality of Hong Kong, Hell's Kitchen in New York City, the formidable walled city of Xi'an, the lost tomb of the first emperor of China, and, finally, into the legendary mountain island of the immortals, Penglai Shan.
[edit] Reception
Like the first game, Fear Effect 2 was praised for its visual style, story, and character development.[1] Sales were strong enough that work had continued on a third installment, titled Fear Effect Inferno, which was to be a PlayStation 2 title. However, financial difficulties at Eidos Interactive forced the publisher to cut back on projects, and Inferno was one of the casualties.
