[edit] About me

On Wikipedia, I prefer to be known as nobody. I am just a guy who's interested in a lot of stuff, and who appreciates that Wikipedia, while not authoritative, can give me a layman's picture of nearly any concept I can think of, whether it's the sun and the moon, or polypeptide chains. I'm a knowledge junkie, and Wikipedia just fits the bill. I'm in my late 20's and I live in Utah. I spend a lot of time editing Wikipedia, but I don't think I fit the mold of a so-called Wikipedian. I suppose there's a term for that - an Exopedian.

Most of my contributions center around topics I enjoy, including technology, science, aviation, and the like. I do it because I'm convinced that Wikipedia is an excellent format to maintain and share this kind of information. Much of what I add is often for my own reference, if it's something that others would benefit from too.

[edit] Ode to MediaWiki

I believe the MediaWiki software - the software behind Wikipedia.org - is a godsend. I've downloaded it and installed several instances of private Wikis for myself and others. It's an amazing way to organize smaller groups and personal information, whether it's the instructions to reprogram my TV remote, the maintenance history of my car, the immunization record of my daughter, or the itinerary for the next family vacation. If I back it up properly and someone knows where to find it, it's an indestructible place to put things I will never lose. Wikipedia is proof that the concept is infinitely scalable. Though written for Unix, MediaWiki can be run for free on any computer with Windows XP Professional.
