S.T.A.R.S. - Service or Squad

It appears that Capcom Japan use Service within the game such as the ID card, badge and posters while Capcom USA have routinely used Squad in press releases and both Squad and Service in packaging. The movie also uses Service while the novels use Squad.

Please do not remove either of these terms from the definition, there is enough official evidence to support both and removal of one will likely cause future Wikipedians to alternate between the two. Check this talk history for prior discussion.

Games, movies and novel storyline contradictions

It has been established from the many major contradictions between the movies, games and novels that each of these mediums should be considered alternative storylines.

DamienG 15:11, Feb 1, 2005 (UTC)

Resident Evil 4 and PlayStation 2

Capcom have reverted on their previous statement to make RE4 a GameCube exclusive and it will be coming to the PlayStation 2. Check out [1] for the official announcement.

While I can understand some people are upset over this removing it's entry from this page will not prevent it from being released nor will it send Capcom a message about how you feel. Criticising a game before it is release is pointless and doesn't belong in Wikipedia which strives for a neutral point of view. DamienG 09:43, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)

"...based on a Japanese horror film"

The article claims RE is based on a Famicom game Sweet Home which was "based on a Japanese horror film." Anyone know which film? Without some kind of citation, this seems like a baseless claim. I suppose if Sweet Home had its own article, it could go there. --Feitclub 06:38, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

  • It's called Suito Homu (which I suppose is also the Japanese name for the Famicom game). KingTT 06:41, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot. I'm going to have to try and see that movie. --Feitclub 22:05, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
Hey guys, i did some re-search and found out that the game sweet home was made by capcom and

was made as the same time as the movie Suito Homu, I would say that the game is based on the movie. But all in all, sweet home was made by capcom and the ideas where then re used in resident evil one. 47LuKaS47 10:43, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Breaking up the article

At the moment, this article encompasses 29 games, 2 movies, and 9 books, sections which would work much better if they were split off into their own articles. This would allow for the wiki standard infobox to be used on each game, and some sort of structure to be given to each game's information (at the moment it's just a series of paragraphs for each game). I don't know what the best way to do this is, and I'll need support of other editors to pull it off, really. This article would become the home of Resident Evil itself, a Resident Evil Series article could be created for organisation and handling the little sections about books and smaller titles (see Metal Gear for an example), RE 1.5 and N64 RE Zero could go into the RE2 and RE Zero articles respectively, etc. etc. Thoughts? Sockatume 07:12, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I agree it's rather long now and see your point about the info boxes/formatting however splitting it would result in 40 cross-linked stubs for the most part which is rather undesirable compared to a single comprehensive entry. I think a better approach is to split games out into their own pages as and when there is enough information here to justify a separate article. The films already have their own pages and I doubt the books will ever have enough information to justify their own. DamienG 08:09, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good, how about splitting off Resident Evil and its remake to one article, and RE4 into another? I'm a bit fatigued to do it right now, but just as an idea. Sockatume 10:21, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I took your advice. I removed the redirect and moved a big chunk of text over to Resident Evil 4. --Feitclub 20:04, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)

Any advice on what to call the article that will encompass the 96 original, Director's Cut, and Remake? Maybe Resident Evil (original) or Resident Evil (1996 game)?

For the Metal Gear series, it's Metal Gear for the series and Metal Gear (game) for the game itself, so how about Resident Evil (game)? Sockatume 23:27, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
OK, I started the transtion. The new article (I used your suggested title) could use a lot more detail now. --Feitclub 01:47, Apr 24, 2005 (UTC)
I suggest a seperate article for the GameCube remake. The original could be Resident Evil (video game) (I hope you don't mind the move, I think it's more formal), while the remake could be Resident Evil (2002 video game) or Resident Evil (GameCube game) (I reccommend the former). Jonny2x4 06:48, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I moved many games to their own articles and added them in the see also section. It's still way too much text left in the article as it is now, and I suggest we should split it even more.
EliasAlucard|Talk 09:15, Apr 30, 2005 (UTC)
Seriously, the article is HUGE! No one will ever have time to read the entire article. It needs to be splitted. Maybe not each single game should have its own article, but at least the major ones should. The cancelled games for instance could still be left here. But the released games should have their own article without the same content here.
EliasAlucard|Talk 10:35, 1 May, 2005 (UTC)
As I mentioned above, if you find a section with a lot of content then move it into a new article, but don't split a game/book/comic/movie out where there is very little to say at the moment (e.g. cancelled titles, books, RE5, Resident Evil: Afterlife movie) because one big article is much easier to read/skim over than clicking/reading/back-arrow and repeating 40 times across various stubs. DamienG 23:44, May 3, 2005 (UTC)
I'd suggest the entire cancelled games section could be moved to it's own page with just a note here that there are a number of cancelled games and link to the article. I wouldn't even bother listing the titles as they are not really part of what Resident Evil is being that none were released and are therefore of more limited interest than the rest of the article. DamienG 23:58, May 3, 2005 (UTC)

Spelling of Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

Which is the proper spelling of the title Code: Veronica? I know the actual title uses a colon next to the word Code (as in Resident Evil Code: Veronica) , but I find this to be very unconventional. I've also seen the spelling Resident Evil: Code Veronica used on Yahoo.com and I think it's more formal, but it might throw off a few people. The other spelling I've seen is Resident Evil - Code: Veronica, but I think the hyphen is too much. What does anyone else think? Jonny2x4 02:27, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

As you said, the actual title is Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Unconventional as it is this is the correct title and any other variant is incorrect. DamienG 07:24, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)
Even though, if you pay attention to some of the other Resident Evil titles (such as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis), you'll notice that they don't actually use colons on their titles. People simply add one for convenience. For example, the official spelling for RE3 is actually Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, not Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. I was wondering whether CV deserves special treatment or not. Jonny2x4 23:34, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)
If RE3 is mis-labelled here that needs to be fixed. It is not Wikipedia's job to rewrite facts or names for it's own convenience. DamienG 08:26, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)
In that case, I would simply go by how their spelled on Capcom's official website for convenience (which is Resident Evil 3: Nemesis). Jonny2x4 04:08, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Grammatically, this seems comparable to Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, and a format similar to this would probably be more apt. However, it's indubitably best to go for the 'official' spelling. --Psyk0 21:21, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Well, i think its more correct the name of Resident Evil - Code: Veronica. In the game title, Resident Evil its in a color, Code: Veronica its in another, so the thing they are trying to make:
Title Resident Evil
Subtitle Code: Veronica
In a row its hard to make the diference in colors or positions (subtitle under of and smaller than title) so its correct uses the hyphen btween title and subtitle in this particular game, bcuse the subtitle have a ":" In RE3 its common uses for the subtitle RE3: Nemesis instead RE3 - Nemesis, bcuse its shorter. --201.153.120.103 02:40, 6 September 2005 (UTC) Shin

Deleting abandoned titles

I'm thinking of deleting the abandoned titles sub-section since the games listed are merely prototype versions of the released games and their differences are already listed in the "Development History" of each title (RE0, RE2, RE4). The only game that wouldn't fit in any of the articles is "BIOHAZARD DASH", but since Capcom has never released any info about the game other than its title, it would be no big loss. Thoughts? Jonny2x4 01:15, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

I was originally against their inclusion but having seen some work go into them and finding they make quite an interesting read I would be sad to see them go. While true they never shiped they do add a bit of background to the developments process and this information seems to be quite hard to find elsewhere. I'd vote to move the whole abandoned titles section to a new page and link to it from here and the respective game page (with no detail at all on the game page) DamienG 07:51, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
Well, like I said, each game's article has a "development history" section which covers prototype versions and such. Details about RE0 on N64, RE1.5 and pre-Ganado RE4 are all covered there now too. The only game I think could deserve an entire article for itself would be RE1.5, since Capcon had a nearly-completed build of the game before cancellation and released too much pre-release material to the public to merely ignore. Even at that, I think the development history section in the RE2 article could cover the differences between the two as well. Jonny2x4 21:42, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
The current situation of lumping descriptions about abandonded prototypes, ports and cancelled titles in with the actual game is flawed. Firstly, not all games have such cancelled titles or prototypes. Secondly there are prototypes that have no corresponding game page (such as RE 1.5) and thirdly those game articles should describe what the game is, not what it might have been or could have been. I think a one or two line reference in appropriate game titles (e.g. "This game went through three prototype versions... a port to the GameBoy was reportedly half-complete" linked to a single comprehensive "Cancelled or abandonded Resident Evil games" is the only logical choice given the current content. DamienG 02:13, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, RE1.5 does have (albeit arguably) a corresponding game page with RE2, since RE1.5 was intended to be RE2 in the first place and the RE1.5 title wasn't attribute to the game until cancellation. Not to mention as many differences there are between the two, some of the stuff in RE1.5 did get used in RE2 (most of the characters from RE1.5 were in RE2 serving different roles such as Marvin and Irons, and the final lab in RE2 was taken directly from RE1.5). Still, I see what you mean about the game articles serving to describe what the games primarily rather than what they could be. The RE2 and RE4 prototypes were almost completely different from their released versions otherwise. Jonny2x4 13:08, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Biohazard vs BioHazard

A recent anonymous edit refreshed a curiosity I had in my mind: is it BioHazard or Biohazard? Obviously, the correct English spelling would be the latter, but that doesn't mean that's how the Japanese title is spelled. Is there any evidence supporting either spelling? --Feitclub 19:42, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)

For what it's worth, GameFAQs spells it BioHazard. --Feitclub 20:10, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)
I wouldn't put my faith on GameFAQs. If you want to get technical though, the older PS/DC Biohazard titles (Bio1-3 and BioCV) uses uppercase letters on their logos (BIOHAZARD), while the GameCube installments uses lowercase letters (biohazard). This is how they differentiate between the original and the GameCube remake of the first game.Jonny2x4 06:53, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
The IMDB which I'd trust more than GameFAQ's lists it as Biohazard... DamienG 07:01, Apr 28, 2005 (UTC)
Agreed! I would stick to Biohazard myself. As I've said about. There's nothing in the actual games to indicate that the H is capitalized. Jonny2x4 04:07, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I have a copy of the original 1996 Japanese release in front of me as I type this. In both the katakana and romaji spellings of the title as it appears several times on the packaging, in the instruction manual, and on the game's actual title screen, there is a gap between BIO and HAZARD. It's always spelled in capital letters, whether it's the red block letter logo or regular typeface. Ergo, if you want to be extremely anal retentive and type it out exactly as Capcom of Japan did, that would be "BIO HAZARD." Personally, I don't take it too seriously. The Japanese have a habit of playing fast and loose with English grammar in order to make things a little more stylish and dynamic. I type "Biohazard" when the occasion calls for me to discuss it. Druff 18:11, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hold the presses: To cause further confusion, I just noticed that the title also apears on the back cover of the manual in all lower case with no gap: "biohazard." Ay carumba. Let's face it, there's just no bottom line to this issue. Druff 18:17, 8 Sep 2005 (UTC)

GBA ROM???

ok I was reading the topic about abandoned games and saw that according to wiki, theres a rom of the gba game. does anyone know if this is true? 2 reasons. 1) if its not then we should remove that part. 2) holy crap if theres a rom of that out there i gotta find it. Robert Ashkenes 06:10, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

http://www.planetdreamcast.com/residentevil/residentevil/re1/beta-gba.htm details the unfinished port so it's very likely to be true. It is highly unlikely you will find an unfinished game anywhere - this would mean one of the original development team has leaked it. DamienG 09:01, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Improving the article

Personally I think this article could use some major improvements. At the moment though, outside of a brief plot summanary and descriptions of the main series, it seems more like a list of games and officially-sanctioned RE merchandise than article. Personally, I think it should focus more on the main series, with a subsection about other media adaptations at the end. Jonny2x4 03:54, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

Continuity Errors

I remember reading a document about continuity errors within the series itself, including things like Capcom releasing a video to explain the bizarre continuity error of having Albert Wesker dead in the first game but alive in Code Veronica.

It would probably be interesting and fun to have a section in this article about those continuity errors.

Colorado?

I don't believe there's any evidence that Raccoon City is in Colorado. As far as the games go, Raccoon City is in the American midwest, and Colorado isn't in the midwest according to my understanding.

In the movies it appears that Raccoon is in PA and is near Philly. I believe you can see that on a weather map during a news broadcast. It seems to make sense, the enviorments in the games and movies seem more like the northeast than the midwest.

Fan fiction

Can someone tell me what, if any, point this section serves? Morgan695 20:57, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

None. It's gone now. Seriously, that section wasn't even an encyclopedic discussion of RE fanfics as a whole. More like a blatant plug for one series. I would also suggest someone remove some of the sprite comics and flash animations from the "Parody" section. In my opinion, they're not really notable. Teflon Don 00:53, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Fan-fiction was revived - likely via the same user - and subsequently deleted. As if the official novels visited on the masses weren't torture enough. :( Apart from being irrelevant spelling, punctuation and sentence structure were abominable. As to WHY such a thing ever reared its head I'd have to side with Teflon here. Papacha 04:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Plug section was added again, and again deleted. Should the content dispute rise once more without some justification for the absolute *need* of this section from the user feel free to take it to the next level. Papacha 07:29, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't know what this "next level" is that you speak of, but the time has come for it. Teflon Don 08:13, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't know about you, but if the typing is as horrible in the actual fanfic as it is in the plug, I don't think it's "Growing in popularity."

  • Agreed! Jonny2x4 06:12, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

What movies influenced Resident Evil/Biohazard

This article seems to neglect this aspect, There's certainly elements of Dario Argento's movies in the works, particularly the mansion settings and the music, with a little bit of George A.Romero( although not as much as people think ) and others

You can also see influences from Assault on Precinct 13 in Resident Evil 2, since a majority of the game takes place in a beseiged police station.

Sales Info

Up-to-date sales info on this series is impossible to find. I\'ve been activly looking over the past couple days, and I can't find it. I'm going to remove it from the to-do list. Morgan695 01:47, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hello, a 3rd Opinion was requested for the fan fiction question, on WP:3O. My 3rd opinion is that the fan fiction does NOT belong in the article. It has since been deleted. Thank you for flying delta. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 16:46, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Film logo vs game logo

Kingpin1055 While I will say the film logos have been pretty cool and unique, I'd hardly say they're the most agreed upon or accepted design. I've only ever noticed them appear on one piece of non movie merchandise, the Outbreak miniseries and I don't think this is valid enough to justify changing the logo. Plus... I'd think we'd want to distance ourselves from the films.

Film and other Media influence

A lot of the original inspiration for RE seemed to come from Night of the living dead like for instance the Mansion(RE), The trophy heads(RE), the main character finding weapons and having a zippo lighter(RE), the burning of bodies with said lighter(Remake), the zombies reaching through the boarded up windows(RE2), the main character talking about coming from a diner(RE2) surrounded by zombies then seeing a fuel truck(RE2) explode, and the last I can think of is the bodies at the end being dragged out by meathooks(RE3.5)

I'm sure we could make a nice section in the article if we found more or similiar things in other films.Atirage 02:37, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

NES Resident Evil original pirate

i dont know if this should be added to the article, but i thought it was quite an intresting find... get the ROM here >[2] i only played it once and it froze on me. You can read an article about it here >[3] (scroll down)

btw, I stumbled on it looking for a ROM image of the cancelled game boy resident evil game, so if anyone has that please share

Seeing as it's a bootleg and not an actual game, it's fancruft and shouldn't be included. Morgan695 17:42, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Films in production

The sentence, "There are currently two Resident Evil films, with two others in development, written by Paul W. S. Anderson." sort of irks me. I could have sworn I heard Paul WS Anderson say that there would only be three films. This sentence implies that there are 4. I've checked on Filmforce, and the imdb, neither mention a 4th installment. Only 3. One before the games, one durring the games, and one after.--HARRYericPOTTER 20:37, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Page belongs at Resident Evil

Some time ago somebody moved this page from Resident Evil to Resident Evil (series) and setup a disambiguation page there that pointed to the video game and the movie too despite already being covered in this page.

Within a few days people were adding all the other movies and games to that page and additional information and so it became a poor copy of this page. Unable to move this page back I put a #Redirect at resident evil to here.

Once again a disambig page is back at Resident Evil pointing to this article, the first video game and the first movie despite all being covered here and the trouble we have gone to provide a media-neutral introduction to the story and characters although perhaps this page could do with some more copyediting to more fairly weight the coverage.

Other franchises such as Star Trek and Pokemon have no such disambiguation page. If anyone else believes this page should be back at Resident Evil or whether the disambiguation page there is a better idea please leave a comment below. DamienG 15:39, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

RESIDENT EVIL WIKI

An official Resident Evil Wiki has been opened at http://residentevil.wikia.com. Could it help to clean up the wikipedia community to simply list the real-world resident evil information here and link it to pages on the RESEVIL wikia?

What exactly makes it "official"? I can see nothing to say it has been sanctioned by Capcom. It is also not wikipedia policy to remove entire regions of content to put elsewhere instead. DamienG 15:08, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Proposal for a Proposed Move

Dear Friends:

Recently, the article titled Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis was renamed simply Sega Mega Drive with the reasoning that Sega Mega Drive is the correct name because it was the name that came 'first' and any other branding that came later should simply be a redirect to the initial name, regardless of which name is better known or more popular (Google Searches come up with more results for "Sega Genesis" than "Sega Mega Drive").

Therefore, I am making the proposal to move Nintendo Entertainment System to the name of origin, Famicom; the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to the name of origin, Super Famicom; and Resident Evil to the name of origin, Biohazard. Please comment on this below. Thank you. 71.244.180.131 23:02, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

The problem with your reasoning is that Wikipedia editors try to avoid redirects as they are startling to newcomers, also the titles of the artices should reflect what the most English speaking users know the subject as, see WP:NAME. By the same reasoning the article on Tom Cruise should be renamed to Thomas Mapother. Why not, that was his original name, shouldn't it be the title of the article? In addition, the main reasoning behind the renaming of the Sega Mega Drive is that it is only known as the Sega Genesis in one country, therefore the majority of people in the world know the subject of the article as the Sega Mega Drive. Whereas the Nintendo Entertainment System is only know as the Famicom in Japan (one country) the same goes for Resident Evil being known only as Biohazard in Japan. Therefore the majority of people the subjects of the articles as the Nintendo Entertainment System and Resident Evil. The Filmaker 00:57, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Please go and cry about the Mega Drive move somewhere else. Why don't you have a look at the gasoline and cheer yourself up on how they've stamped out the mention of the word petrol. Mega Drive wasn't necessarily moved because it was the name of origin, Wikipedia uses the name that's most easily recognised. I cannot believe you would prefer gasoline/petrol over gasoline. This is retarded. - Hahnchen 15:28, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Check it out: Sega Genesis. It still goes to the same damn page! What a miracle! It's almost as if this were a completely pointless and moot point brought! RPH 17:03, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Please see, WP:Point, the section was removed by an Mod for violating the policy, and then re-added. Wikipedia is not a forum, there's no need to rant about something that about that is almost irrelevant to the article. --ShadowJester07 02:51, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, unless you or Kafziel simply don't feel like mentioning it on your user pages, neither one of you are mods. And with your record of insulting other editors here on Wiki, I sure hope you're not a mod. Regardless of how you may feel about the above proposal, the intent was sincere behind it - The SEGA Mega Drive/SEGA Genesis article set a precedence for naming articles after their original name. That is what the above proposal was about. Furthermore, any further discussion on the validity of this proposal needs to be taken to personal talk pages and this article's talk page needs to remain for discussion directly concerning edits to this article. If you wish to discuss the idea of changing the name to the original name or leaving it as it is, I'm more than willing to talk about that on this page. Thank you. 70.106.204.245 03:05, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
No it didn't set a precedent for using the original name, it just uses the most common name for the system. You yourself preferred the naming Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis for some stupid reason. Gasoline/Petrol it is then? The precedent was not for naming it with the "original name", but the name it's most commonly referred to. And The rest of the world somehow outnumbers America even though you may cry into your pillow over the Wikipedia renaming of the article. The world doesn't revolve around Googlefights, or you. I'm not going to reply any further, and when these petty conversations die, I'm going to "archive" them. - Hahnchen 15:35, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
It's not just GoogleFights, please feel free to search using any major search engine and find one that shows "Sega Mega Drive" being more popular than "Sega Genesis". But, since you have no plans to reply, I'll go ahead and state that there are no major search engines that give more results for "Sega Mega Drive" than "Sega Genesis". Thus, if the article was going to be renamed to the most common, most popular, most well known name, "Sega Mega Drive" would *not* have been it. Thus, the only remaining reason for renaming the article "Sega Mega Drive" was, as I said here, because it was the original name, regardless of which was more popular or well known.
So we go back to my first statement, the renaming of that article set a precedence here on Wiki to renaming an article to its original name, regardless of which is more popular or well known. Thank you. 70.106.204.245 02:42, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
I literally cannot believe how down right stupid you are, so much so that I am actually going to break my promise and reply, I cannot believe I have to stoop so bloody low or that I'm arguing with someone who thought Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis was a better name. When I referred to Googlefights, I meant the internet, which you obviously failed to grasp. When the vast majority of websites, especially gaming websites and websites in general are American (Gamespot, IGN, Mobygames, Gamespy....), what did you expect? I mean, if you're going to base your arguments on search engines whilst ignoring the real actual world, then I suggest you head over to Aluminium and plant that flag. Would anyone here be interested in starting up a WikiProject for Resident Evil? I've created a temporary page here. Its still rough, so any help would be appreciated.--KrossTalk 16:59, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Critical response section

Contains too much unsourced material. Namely the statements regarding the fans. Resident Evil 2 was considered the best during the PS1 era. Things have changed since then obviously. I'm removing parts of it, unless someone has sources to back up these claims. Lengis 02:55, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Resident Evil Archives

Should this book be placed under the novel section of this article or is it considered just to be a recap on all the resident evil games prior to Resident Evil 4 and the upcomming Resident Evil 5? Leonida November 17th 2006
