The Responsible Education About Life Act (or REAL Act) (S. 972 and H.R. 1653, identical) is a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives on March 22, 2007. Sponsored by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), with 12 cosponsors, and Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Christopher Shays (R-CT), with 75 cosponsors, the bill is currently in committee.
The bill would provide federal funding for comprehensive sex education programs in schools. Currently, only abstinence-only-until-marriage education receives federal funding. The bill would provide funding for programs which include information about both abstinence and contraception and condoms.[1]
[edit] Previous versions of the bill
Previous versions of the bill have been introduced in the 107th, 108th, and 109th Congresses. In each case, the bill never made it out of committee.
