[edit] Discussion on clerk roles

Contributors here may wish to see/comment on Wikipedia:Community_noticeboard#Clerks_of_all_types_need_to_be_deprecated --Durin

It it worthwhile to limit the number of clerks? In principle I don't object to the involvement of more users. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 18:42, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

To be completely frank, Essjay arranged things a certain way. Both Daniel and I recognize the need for some modifications, rewriting, and loosening up. Unfortunately this has caught me at a busy time at work, but I will try and bring the page more in line with CHU/Assistance, hopefully tonight. Thatcher131 18:45, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Concern

I am concerned about allowing new, essentially unknown users to be checkuser clerks, even if there are no privacy ramifications. A community banned user became a checkuser clerk, clearly with the intention of insinuating himself into the process to try to glean information about how it works so that he could refine his "skills". He had been editing under this latest sockpuppet identity for only a month or so, and volunteered for the position a few hours after an IP check was initiated on one of his other identities. If there were more stringent rules about who gets inside, he would have been slowed down. There may be no privacy ramifications, but surely you don't think it's a good idea for an abuser of the system to be accepted into one of the inner sanctums, giving his fake identity some kind of validation? I know there are no foolproof protections against ban evaders, but we don't have to help them learn how the protection systems work, do we? Assuming good faith is great, but I think this is carrying it too far. Tvoz |talk 09:22, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Jimbo appears to have determined that VK35 is NOT a sockpuppet of a banned user. [1] But if he was, what would you suggest. An approvals list to determine if a user is suitable to be a checkuser clerk? Funpika 20:23, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps a sponsorship by an admin, a minimum time/number of edits, some kind of check try to be sure the person is mature, knowledgable and responsible. A pure volunteer arrangement doesn't make sense to me for an area that is sensitive. Tvoz |talk 08:23, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
