I wonder if the crats would be willing to discuss this a bit? This one may be tricky. Assuming things keep going basically this way, if you close it by strictly counting the numbers of the votes, it would be an obvious success. However there are substantial opposes here, including for very recent actions. I disagree. I think the crats can handle this on their own. And its not an obvious promote I might point out. There was a recent discussion on the bar (level or number of votes percentile), and right now TPH is below the suggested bar (and I am keeping in mind that the poll is non binding, but it still shows a significant trend in RfA closures). 146/54/7 as I type this; that's about 70.5%. Given the rationale behind a few of the supports and a few of the opposes, however, I think this is gonna give some crat a headache. Several opposers just think that 5 RfAs in a year is just too many, which I find to be a fairly weak argument. Not to overlook the stronger arguments in the "oppose" column -- I'm well aware that I've made a few dumb mistakes that potential admins should avoid, which is part of the reason I've been on a partial WikiBreak™ the last couple days (the other reason being that my sister's been hogging the computer). Currently, I don't see any need for a crat chat, maybe partially due to Kurt's comment that it has been dropping (and currently appears well below the threshold). Crat chat might be appropriate if he was above 75 or 80% but still had 50+ oppose votes. With the admission that I did vote Oppose, I don't see how this could reasonably pass at the current numbers. Also, no reasonable Bureacrat would discount opposes made over "5 rfas in a year". A crat might disagree with that reasoning, but its not like those votes are against wikipedia policy. Why would you have a crat chat if he was above the threshold (keeping in mind that we aren't voting). It is not insignificant that around 150 Wikipedians believe he should be an admin but are being blocked by a minority, a significant part of which is made up of votes with no individual rationale. This is why people don't seek adminship - it's a vote where the minority wins and gets to criticize every little move you ever made (updates the tally too often? wtf?). That's an insult to everyone who votes oppose, including myself. Also, I think that there is a maturity level which is highly indicative of updating your tally. Actually if you read what I wrote I never called you a daft fool. I also never said that everyone else was wrong. Read Friday's response. He calmly explains why he believes I'm wrong and maybe he is right. I hope that he is. I still don't see how a person's ability to be a good admin can be judged on how often he updates a tally. It seems like every day I see yet another RfA (or 2) pass with an amazingly high rate, 95 to 100%. I say, great, we are getting good people in with no objection. I cringe when I see the 80%s go through with a significant amount of valid oppose votes. I question whether most of the support votes even considered the oppose info given before making their vote. Anyways... to sum up a quick point that would no doubt justify writing for pages and pages: An ill-equiped editor that has been granted Admin status could do significantly more damage to the community than a ready editor who has been rejected. The minority doesn't win, but we've never been in the habit of promoting whoever gets over 50% support, either. I'd like to see cases like this settled without resorting to vote counting. The crats would decide whether the opposes had merit or not. If there are opposes for good reason, no promotion. If not, then promote. As someone who voted Oppose but did not give a reason other than to reference other Oppose votes, I am offended that not providing a reason should classify my vote as inappropriate or not worthy of consideration. There are a variety of reasons to not give any reasoning, including:

  • not wanting to be badgered for giving a reason
  • not wanting to put more time and energy into the 5th one of these in a year than necessary
  • not wanting to overly besmirch the candidate's reputation
  • not wanting to make the candidate feel bad
  • not wanting to get into arguments
  • not wanting to expose private reasons to public scrutiny, because of private information etc

So if someone votes Oppose with no other reason, it should count. It should definitely count as much as someone else who says Support with no other reason, or a vacuous reason like "a great guy and a great editor" or some such nonsense.--Filll (talk) 17:34, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

TPH, you should also consider that once many diffs and solid points were brought out in oppose votes, the vote started going against you (or rather much less for you). (edit conflict) OK. For the record then, some of the paraphrasing being done on this talk page (particularly paraphrasing TPH) has been wrong and unfair. TPH has been assuming good faith left and right here, and that should be noted. Also, I am not against a bureacrat discussion per se. I am against one if it is under the notion that support votes need little or no explanation (one of the more puzzling wikipedia rules I have ever come across) and oppose votes could some how hold less weight based on their reasoning. That's why I think it's dangerous to even enter those waters when there are already 61 votes against. As I wrote this, I see another uncivil edit from Orangemarlin. The reason has traditionally been that adminship is no big deal (Jimbo quote) so the onus has been on the opposers to argue why the candidate shouldn't be an admin. Not saying I agree with that, not letter by letter anyway. EconomicsGuy (talk) 18:40, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

My point was, this culture where we have to second guess every oppose is sort of annoying to me. For example, suppose that I have some sensitive information that I do not want to share with the community, and I want to oppose based on this private information. I might just say "5 RfAs in a year is too many" or "Oppose per above" and not give more detail. It is not that I do not have more information on which I am basing my decision, just that I am not prepared to share it, for any number of reasons (including making the candidate feel worse than necessary, as I have explained at a few RfAs, or maybe not wanting to sway others by my reasoning). But the claim that "well those guys didn't give any reason for their opposes, so they do not count, whereas all these supports count", well that just starts to irritate me a little. --Filll (talk) 20:44, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Basically, if it gets uglier than usual with lots of arguing about every oppose, then feelings get hurt. And it creates bad will, and more bad will than necessary of course. I seem to recall a few threads at AN/I where someone made spurious complaints about someone else, and stated it was to get "even" for failed RfAs. Wow...we do not need more of that. Why encourage this? I am an inclusionist by nature, so I have a bit of a problem with someone who's main stated purpose is to delete more stuff on Wikipedia. A lot of that stuff is something that someone like me has written, or is in the midst of writing. We worry so much about discouraging newbies with WP:BITE and WP:CIVIL, but we do not worry much about what a newbie feels like when they are just trying to write an article and it gets deleted by someone who is a bit too zealous, and they do not understand the rules for speedys and AfDs? A lot of them do not even realize they can retrieve deleted articles. So they are excited about a chance to contribute, and they start writing, and then we drop a bomb on them. The heckling (not by TPH) of most of the first few opposes probably did not encourage subsequent ones to expand on their reasoning - I think you often see this. I think it's noticeable that a while after the heckling stopped, many opposers gave longer reasonings. There is also the question of whether opposers had already given fuller reasons in earlier RfAs.
