[edit] Tra
(46/0/0) final Andre (talk) 19:54, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Tra (talk · contribs) - To those in the community of Wikipedia, I present to you, Tra, as a candidate.
Tra has been here on Wikipedia since October 2004, though he has been active mostly since May 2006. In that time, he has made almost 5000 edits to different areas of the project. Among those 5000 edits, he has over 1500 to the mainspace and over 1250 in the Wikipedia-space. He also has edits to categories, help pages, images, over 400 edits to templates, and even edits to the MediaWiki talk.
He is a member of Wikipedia: WikiProject Big Brother, and has worked hard on articles relating to Big Brother. He has also worked on articles such as Chewing gum, Guernsey, Lord of the Flies, and Nikki Grahame. Tra has both done article-writing and vandal-fighting, so he is experienced with both of those activities.
Besides edits, Tra has a lot of experience with policy. He has been active a lot at Wikipedia: Village pump (technical), Wikipedia: Village pump (proposals), and Wikipedia: Request an account. Plus, Tra has created highly useful user scripts and worked with them. With his personality, he is well-mannered, and he is great with the newcomers, which I know from personal experience. All my interactions with Tra have been positive, and in my early days, Tra was patient and kind to me.
Tra is a brilliant editor, and he will make a brilliant administrator. Upon receiving the tools, I am completely confident that he will make great use of them. Acalamari 02:03, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia as an administrator. You may wish to answer the following optional questions to provide guidance for participants:
- 1. What admin work do you intend to take part in?
- A: In Wikipedia:Request an account, there are various situations when administrator access is required. The most common one is creating accounts that have been flagged by the software as too similar to another username (but where the the other username has no or very few edits that were some time ago, reducing the chances of a conflict). Periodic deletion of the page's history (for privacy reasons) and adding links to the page from various system messages when required are also times where sysop abilities would be useful.
- Administrator access would also be useful for when a system message or highly-used, protected template needs to be updated. I have occasionally before had to use {{editprotected}} to ask for changes to system messages and I have also noticed that there is often a few requests pending in Category:Wikipedia protected edit requests so being able to answer them would also be useful. Generally, I would start with minor and uncontroversial changes to pages with lower visibility and where a change would cause a more significant impact on the wiki (such as rewording a high-visibility page like Template:Disambig), I would wait for a consensus to develop before implementing these changes.
- These are the types of activities that I can see myself doing mainly in the near future. I might also, once I am more experienced, move on to do other activities such as history merges and requested moves. When reverting vandalism, the rollback tool would be useful (even though it is only a little bit faster than javascript) and if necessary, I would be able to block vandals which again, would be faster than reporting then to WP:AIV and having another admin deal with them.
- 2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?
- A: A lot of this has been covered in the nomination. I would say, in terms of article edits, I have contributed quite a lot to various Big Brother related articles (1, 2, 3) and their related pages with edits such as re-writing pieces of text ([1] [2]), making minor format changes ([3] [4]) and adding in pieces of information as they become available ([5] [6]). A lot of my article edits have been vandalism reversions, as I have previously watchlisted a few pages that are often vandalised, such as previous series of Big Brother and articles such as Chewing gum and Lord of the Flies which often tend to attract vandalism as well.
- In the Wikipedia: space, I have helped to construct the page Wikipedia:Request an account and its related subpages and templates (1, 2, 3, 4) to allow it to work more efficiently. I also help to handle requests made there. I have also participated on various village pumps where I have helped other users to sort out problems involving complex wiki-syntax etc.
- I am quite proficient in template syntax, ParserFunctions and other wiki syntax, and I have been been able to use this ability to help make and maintain templates.[7] I also have some knowledge of javascript, which I have used to make a few javascript tools and to help me fairly repetitive edits to pages such as fixing the sortkey for pages in a category.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: Fortunately, I haven't been involved in any major conflicts, outside of the usual disputes that occur over things like article content and how something should be formatted. I find it often helps to pause a bit and look at the whole situation, and I often find that the opposing side to you has some very valid points which can persuade me to take their viewpoint. With that in mind, I find it's often easier to be flexible and to change my mind depending on the opinions that I see and I'm willing to make a change to a page supported by a consensus of editors even if I personally would disagree with it. Tra (Talk) 19:38, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- A question from bainer (talk)
- 4. Under what circumstances should one ignore a rule?
- A: Rules should be ignored if, by doing so, common sense is used and the encyclopedia is improved as a result. Most of the time, this would not need to happen however, since since the existing rules we have were written with the intent of improving the encyclopedia. The ignore all rules policy basically asks you to follow the spirit of these policies and guidelines, rather than the letter.
- As an example of how I might and have encountered this rule, if someone wishes to request a username that has been flagged as similar to an existing user, and the existing user has a low, but substantial quantity of contributions that were all made several months ago, the request would normally be denied. However, if the requester is able to provide a good reason why they should have that name, such as having the same username on another language Wikipedia, it is a lot more likely that their request would be accepted. The reason for this is that although the letter of the username policy states that "Usernames that closely resemble the name of another Wikipedia user and may cause confusion" are prohibited, the spirit of this is to make it easier to identify and distinguish the different users. Allowing someone to use the same username on multiple language Wikipedias would help with that. Tra (Talk) 12:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

- I probably should mention, since someone's bound to ask, the lack of contributions in 2005 and early 2006 is due mainly to the fact that I had begun to lose interest in Wikipedia back then, although I later became more interested in Wikipedia and consequently resumed editing in May 2006. The one and two-week gaps in editing that I've had recently are due to me being either busy or away from the computer. Tra (Talk) 19:38, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

- Support nom beating or otherwise. I'll be honest - I can't stand Big Brother and think it's about the worst load of tosh on telly. However Your Q1 answer is superb - referencing areas that are commonly not cited in Q1 of RFA and backed up by history. Your contribs and dedication are outstanding, your civility and helpfullness is evidenced across your edits. Just remember - when this RfA passes we're watching you! :) Pedro | Chat 19:51, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Support - I see nothing in the contribs to dissuade me, and your count shows a diversity of spaces editted. A fine candidate. Hiberniantears 19:55, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

- It's not just eating, I have to sleep too. :) Sleeping is as evil as eating lunch, and prevents me from editing even more so than eating. :) Acalamari 20:15, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

- Support I've known Tra pretty much since the start of my wiki-career (yes, I started by editing Big Brother articles). He's always polite and helpful, always willing to assist others with their work. He's here for the right reasons (and yes, I LOVE Big Bro) - that is, we're here to write an encyclopedia. He's done great work in the account creation area, and is a trustworthy and experienced Wikipedian. I've offered to nominate him many times before, so this is well overdue. Good luck, Tra. Majorly (talk) 01:20, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- Support; many of the adminship areas Tra wants to work in are almost understaffed at the moment (especially with WP:ACC, having more admins working there would reduce the delay before new users get their accounts and therefore help avoid biting them), and from my experience with this user and a review of their contributions I have confidence in the candidate's competance with technical work. (Note to Tra: you may have to create a non-administrator alternate account for WP:ACC work, as you can't get the 'Similar to' message when testing a new account name when logged into an admin account (instead the account will just be created); I suspect you know this already but this is just a reminder to make sure that similar-active accounts won't be created by mistake.) --ais523 16:02, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
