[edit] The_Thadman

The_Thadman (talk · contribs) – I believe that I am well qualified to be an administrator at Wikipedia. I try my best to treat all issues fairly and always find a compromise, and I recognize the utmost importance of information commons and the need in our modern society to preserve and encourage them. I am well-versed in the theory and psychology of online interactions, and (if it matters :-) ) currently hold a B.A. in Information Technology & Informatics which I took with a focus in data-driven websites and human-computer interaction and a double-major in Religion, and am enrolled in the Masters of Library Science program at Rutgers University, so I am familliar with both the mechanical and human aspects of such a medium. My focus is on people, and people understanding people, and I firmly believe that most of the issues that we face her at Wikipedia stem from, ironically, non-communication. I have worked on digital library projects in the past, including eBethArké: The Syriac Digital Library with Beth Mardutho, and I'm now working on cataloguing over 1000 Syriac texts for our new system. As for more wikipedia-esque things that I'm good at, I have a natural knack for coding templates, I contribute on subjects that I am trained in, and I try my best to adhere to the rules. However, I'm not perfect, and when I realize that I've made a mistake, I take every effort to make sure the situation is properly fixed. Although I am not Christian, my pet articles are mostly in the realms of linguistics in early Christianity and 1st Century Judaism as it is a subject I was trained in and one that fascinates me: Son of Man, Names and titles of Jesus in the New Testament, Historical Jesus, Jesus, I've coded two userboxes that are rapidly becoming popular (User:The_Thadman/Userbox/MBTI and User:The_Thadman/Userbox/PolCompass), and I'm currently working on a new set of templates that will allow easier upkeep of talk archive pages (another thing I've been working on a lot as of late). I know that I tend to be a bit wordy when I have to talk about myself, so if there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask. אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 13:40, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

- I withdraw for the time being, given that the current concensus appears to be that I require more experience than I currently have. In the future, when I have made a larger number of quality contributions I will re-apply. :-) Thanks to everyone who left comments! אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 00:49, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- Support
- Support There is no good reason why you should not become an admin, you could have been here for a very long time as an IP (like me). It would also be beneficial to have some newer users as admins, I am sure new users would appreciate going to another newish user for advice. Abcdefghijklm 16:17, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Support We live in a society today where quantity is constantly valued over quality. People look at guys like Don Juan or Fonzie or "that dude from college who slept with 57 girls last semester" as heroes. Well excuse me for not being a hero for rather having one woman who really loves me and not trying to find out how many chicks I can shag by going to drunken fraternity parties and using a bunch of cheap pickup lines. My boy Thadman here might only have 32 namespace edits but they're quality namespace edits and really what is 1,000 but a nice-sounding socially constructed milestone? If this encyclopedia is to reach its true potential we must ignore this infatuation of numerical amounts and give admin tools to guys like this. Mr. Sensible 19:56, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Support. I don't think this user would abuse the mop, and he wants to deal mostly with (protecting) articles, so it's not like he doesn't have experience in what he wishes to do. --Rory096 21:23, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose
- 32 Wikipedia namespace edits. 32. Not nearly enough edits overall. Try back in a few months.AdamBiswanger1 14:48, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose Sorry, but the answers don't indicate a need for the tools, and projectspace count is too low. Yanksox (talk) 14:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per AdamBiswanger1. Keep editing and gaining more experience and try again another time. :-) --Andeh 14:57, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. --Guinnog 15:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose Low overall edit count.--Kungfu Adam (talk) 15:15, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. Naconkantari 15:24, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose for the same reasons I note here. RadioKirk (u|t|c) 18:21, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose, not enough experience. --Mhking 18:29, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose Falls well short of my usual criteria. Simply put needs more experience on Wikipedia, and this is usually shown in the form of more edits, especially to the Wikipedia namespace. --Wisden17 21:21, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. 500 edits since July last year? -- Steel 21:56, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose fails my rfa criteria. Anonymous__Anonymous 21:58, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral
- Reminder not to pile-on neutral - I think you're a good person but I think you've got a lot you can still do without the sysop buttons, take a look at your bullet list, none of them require anything more than an editor account -- Tawker 15:35, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- What Tawker said :) There's plenty more 'admin type' work you can do before applying for a sysop account. Petros471 15:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral What you have done makes you an excellent editor - but I don't feel you're the kind of editor who needs sysop tools just yet. Perhaps when you've become more involved in other namespaces. —Xyrael / 16:18, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral per those above. I'd be happy to support in a few months. --Mr. Lefty Talk to me! 16:23, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral I'd rather not give you a not vote, but you have a little bit too few edits. Don't be discouraged...just come back in a couple of months when you have a little bit more experience on the site. --Alphachimp talk 17:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral - You seem a very good user, interested in building Wikipedia as a high quality encyclopedia. I'll support in a month or two if you keep your entusiasm, if continue learning how things work in Wikipedia and what is the role of a sysop. Cheers! Afonso Silva 17:55, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Neutral. Would make a good admin, but maybe in a few months. Sorry, I can't support someone with only 34 Wikispace edits and <600 edits overall. Roy A.A. 19:18, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

- Is the only really big issue that is holding me back the number of edits I've made? If that's the case, I now have something to work towards, and I'll reapply once I have made a larger contribution. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 15:14, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- That's the spirit, dear Steve :) I am pleased to see you take the matter so well; I see great promise in you, and I'd hate to see you discouraged over this RfA. We merely need a little more participation for a better assessment of your contributions, that's all. I suggest you to withdraw your nomination for now (just for now!) and reapply in a couple of months, with a little more knowleddge about Wikipedia's policies and procedures, and you'll be a shoo-in for sure. Let me know if I can assist you in any way. Regards, Phædriel ♥ tell me - 15:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: I could help out a lot with article protections as I remember it being a big problem when I was in collaboration working on the Jesus article. There were some mistakes made that led to confusion and more open periods of time where the article was exposed to vandalism. I could also be a big help at WP:AIV. In the backlog I could best handle:
-
-
-
- Articles lacking sources
- Articles that need to be wikified
- Articles to be split
- Articles which may be biased
- Articles with unsourced statements
- NPOV disputes
- Underpopulated categories
- Everything else I'm willing to "play by ear" :-)

- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: I'm particularly pleased with my additions to the Son of Man, some of my additions to the Historical Jesus article and the userboxes that I've put together (see above). I'll also have more to report once I'm done drafting my archiving templates. :-)
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: I've been in several situations where I was a smidge annoyed, but nothing that I could not handle. Most of the issues are very common things that one would come to expect on message boards and other internet media, and through my academic studies I know what to expect in online social interactions, how to avoid problem, and (most importantly) how to fix things. I'm generally not easily bothered.
