Orderinchaos78 (talk · contribs) - It is my pleasure to nominate Orderinchaos78 for the mop. This first-rate editor has been around since March 2006, accumulating over 9700 edits including 5200 in the article space. He has been active in many areas, and is heavily involved in a number of Australian WikiProjects.

OIC was one of the team that put together the successful Infobox Australian Place template project, which replaced numerous non-standard infoboxes with a single all-purpose box, and which is now used on over 3500 articles. He tells me that his edit count includes changes to over 700 articles (as well as some of the template coding) for that project alone. OIC recently had his first (of many, I'm sure) Featured Article promotion with Hamersley, Western Australia. He helped bring several other articles to GA, including Cullacabardee, Western Australia. For those who care, his edit summary usage has been at 100% for months; overall, it is about 99% for major edits and 80% for minor edits. A quick look at his contributions shows his involvement in many areas including being a regular participant at XFD discussions.

I have always found OIC's edits to be mature and well thought out[1]. He nurtures newbies[2] while showing a firmer hand[3] when its needed. When he offers comments at discussion pages, his ideas are researched and thoughtful, rather than a simple Support/Delete vote.[4]

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
A: The main need for administrators and where I hope to be able to help most is in backlogged areas, such as managing Wikipedia's copyright obligations, clearing the speedy deletion backlog in areas where there is no contest, closing XfD debates, reverting obvious cases of vandalism (I maintain over 1,200 pages on my watchlist), in line with Wikipedia policies and consensus, and spotting obvious violations and patrolling new pages and recent changes. I have also helped with many non-sysop admin chores such as finding references for unsourced-tagged articles, ISBN numbers and fixing articles in need of repair, such as Collipulli, Chile.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A: I am most proud of Hamersley, which started as a stub and is now an FA, and Cullacabardee, which didn't exist and is now a GA. I've also assisted a number of articles in meeting FA or GA requirements, such as Canadian postal code and South Australian legislative election, 2006 (see my 4-6 January contributions for both), and have got countless stubs or cleanup-tagged articles to B-status. I found working on the Australian Places infobox project team enjoyable, and replaced over 400 manual infoboxes in Melbourne articles, and in several cases significantly improved the article's content as well (for example Balnarring, Victoria and Christmas Hills, Victoria).
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: I think anyone who's been here long enough has been in a few. When you think you are right, and someone else insists on replacing your version, especially if the final result appears inferior or POV, stress inevitably results. Rather than engage in a revert war I ask colleagues for a second opinion, while trying to engage the editor on the talk page. Two situations I have been involved in were Mooroolbark, Victoria and Talk:Indigenous Australians - the former resulted in the editor initially getting blocked then changing to a less aggressive, more cooperative style and working with us; the latter resulted in a long-term block of a POV editor. One I wasn't involved in but have assisted with was the Townsville/Thuringowa dispute between two good faith editors with very different views - I have been mediating their dispute and reviewing edits on related articles with both editors' cooperation.


General comments

  • I value consensus over unilateral action, especially where controversial issues are concerned. Unilateral action, unless it's so obvious that anyone in the same position would have taken the same action, or is covered by a general understanding which reflects consensus anyway, risks alienating people who feel they "lost" the dispute.
  • Admins should never be closed-minded. While I will defend my point of view, if I am challenged on a decision or contribution and it's clear the other person is in the right, I'm happy to back down. [5] The same applies if consensus goes against my point of view. The encyclopaedia being right is a far more important goal than myself being right, and in occasions such as the above I am able to learn something.
  • Policies and guidelines are there for a reason, and have been developed to effectively codify common sense. That being said, it is possible to become overly legalistic with policies and guidelines and it is important to keep common sense firmly in mind when applying policies/guidelines to determine an outcome. I see it as admins' and long-term users' role in a debate to educate users on policies and guidelines and how they apply, and owe a great debt to those who taught me as a wet-around-the-ears Wikipedian.
  • I don't believe blocks should be used punitively. The purpose of a block, in my view, is to prevent damage. [6]
  • I avoid the terms "deletionist" and "inclusionist" as that implies an inflexible stance. You can't work with 1.5 million articles and *not* be flexible in your approach. I judge each case on merit in line with deletion criteria.

Having said that, he has been shown to bring the same amount of dedication he applies in real life to his involvement on WP. He is an exceptional candidate who brings both expertise and a level head to the table. He is a wealth of knowledge, and his help with various issues including article construction, templating, and research has personally worked with me to achieving the first of what I hope will be many articles at B class and above. I was very impressed with his role in the Infobox Australian Place template project where he gathered together a huge database of information and then applied it across many hundreds of articles. But the icing on the cake was the significant expansion of a number of those articles on the way through then coming back time and again to manage vandalism and patiently negotiate editorial disputes.
