[edit] Martyman

final (78/2/0) ending 01:23 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Martyman (talk · contribs) – I have decided to nominate myself for adminship as I feel I could be a more useful member of the community with access to the admin tools. I have been a contributor to Wikipdia since October 2004, although I had a pretty extensive wikibreak for part of 2005, due to real life issues. I have been back editing on a daily basis since around September 2005. Over my time here I am proud to have helped create several featured articles, the two that stand out to me are Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory and Lake Burley Griffin both of which I was the major contributor on. I have also been active in uploading maps, diagrams and photos to many articles. I am an active member of WikiProject Canberra, welcome newcomers and occasionally help out at the science reference desk. Recently, I have become more interested in helping out with Untagged Images, and of course dealing with the ever present vandalism, both of which would be easier to accomplish with rollback and speedy abilities. --Martyman-(talk) 00:33, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

  6. I have been working with Martyman and others on Wikipedia:3D Illustrations which is coming along nicely (anyone interested in commenting or helping drive this guideline from proposed to accepted, please chime in on the talk page there). We were working with a user who meant well but whose communication style was not quite the same as most of us expect. Martyman got a little frustrated at one point which he shared with me, but taken as a whole I feel his conduct in the entire matter (determining there is a problem, consulting with others about what could be done, leading the discussion on the guidelines, doing a lot of the spadework to create new templates, working with other users, etc) is just the sort of consensus driven approach we all should be using. So I strongly Support this nomination. I think he'll make a fine admin, and with the admin powers, he'll be able to make image cleanup much more efficient. ++Lar: t/c 02:58, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

  78. Support. The fact that you're from Canberra was mighty off putting for me, but then I compared that to Tasmania, and then compared Tasmania to New Zealand, and finally came to the conclusion that Helen Clark isn't very attractive. So, based on that, I'll support you. Your being a great and committed contributor didn't really factor into the decision much. Harro5 06:02, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Oppose

  1. Martyman would not be a good choice, as most of his edits are really disguised vandalism. To make him an administrator would be a mistake. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Biff loman9 (talk • contribs) 16:50, 15 February 2006

  2. Oppose - Recently, I had an image that the OrphanBot had problems with. The OrphanBot notified me of the problem image, but the image was already gone. Apparently it had been deleted shortly after OrphanBot detected the image, without giving me a chance to review the image and make any corrections needed. I went to CLW to explain my position, a few minutes later I had a message from MartyMan which in essence said that I should've known the image was a problem even though I had no notice about the image and I had quite honestly forgotten about the image among the several thousand other things I had submitted to Wikipedia over time. As a result, I have serious concerns over this person's ability to perform administrative duties in a fair and impartial manner. Also, I think this matter is between me and CLW and that he had no business involving himself at this junction. Perhaps later if it proceeded into mediation or arbitration it would've concerned him. These are two reasons why I am opposing his candidacy at this time. JesseG 03:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
It appears it is somehow now an offense to join in a public conversation and try to explain why a problem may have occured. I can see no problems with my post to your talk page, you have totaly over reacted. --Martyman-(talk) 04:13, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
I will not withdraw my vote at this time, pending the outcome of the dispute resolution process on Wikipedia. At this time I have requested informal mediation, but I will make a formal case out of it if I feel that there is a need to do so. JesseG 05:10, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
This RfA was due to close several hours ago so you will not get a chance to withdraw your vote later. This is a very big fuss to be making over the deletion of one untagged image (which I had nothing to do with). --Martyman-(talk) 05:17, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
A. I would be interested in helping out with Wikipedia:Copyright problems, Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. I will also continue to watch pages for vandalism and would be happy to help out with RC patrol. I get frustrated at the moment when I follow recent changes and after manually reverting find I have been beaten to it by an admin. --Martyman-(talk) 01:22, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. I am proud to have helped develop the Canberra wikproject which has been very successful in focusing the development of articles related to Canberra. I am very pleased with all of the featured articles I have edited. Some featured articles to which I have contributed include Lake Burley Griffin, Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory, History of the Australian Capital Territory and Flag of Australia.
While it has been a learning experience and sometimes frustrating, I am happy with my recent efforts to develop a guideline for the inclusion of 3D illustrations into wikipedia articles.
As part the effort of dealing with untagged images on wikipedia, I am always happy when an editor I contact asks for help with learning more about which tags are appropriate [2]. --Martyman-(talk) 01:22, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A. Yes, hasn't everyone? I do get stressed when I have a conflict with another editor. I have generally found that if you step back from the situation a bit it never looks as serious as it at first seemed. Discussion can help in many cases where it often turns out to be a simple misunderstanding or difference of opinion. My recent dealings with User:Cigammagicwizard is an example of where a young editor started behaving abusively for little reason, but through discussion they calmed down and learned a bit more about wikipedia in the process (as shown by [3][4] and later [5]). I admit I have not yet found the perfect solution for dealing with persitant anonymous trolls, unless you count trying to ignore them. I try to never resort to insulting other editors, tempting though it would be at times. ;-) --Martyman-(talk) 01:22, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
4. How would you respond if another admin undid one of your admin actions without discussing it with you first (e.g. (un)blocking, (un)protecting, (un)deleting)? Hermione1980 00:48, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
A. I would assume the other admin would provide a reason for undoing my action, and if the reason seemed valid I would take it on board and try not to repeat whatever I did that needed to be undone. If there was no reason given or the reason did not seem to fit with my interpretation of the policy, I would first try to discuss the reversion with the other admin on their talk page. If that showed no sign of helping matters I would ask for input from another admin, either by asking one/some of the admins I know or via the Administrators' noticeboard. --Martyman-(talk) 00:57, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
