Brief Statement

I have worked as a system architect and collaboration tool designer for many years, and I have been an Arpanet/Internet user since the mid-1980s. I've been editing various elements of WP since November 2005. I feel it is time to step up and offer my experience and skills to the community in a more structured fashion.

Questions for the candidate

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
A: I am particularly interested in issues of copyright and plagiarism. See for example my comment last December in Talk:Dorothy Ray Healey about the proposed merge of two similar pages.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A: I have added and enhanced various pages related to Howth, where I grew up. I have contributed to sorting out the muddle connected with HMV and the Nipper painting and logo. I am always keen to clarify nuances of language and improve accuracy, as in some of my contributed refinements to Charles Haughey and Conor Cruise O'Brien.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: The only conflict I recall concerned some early contribution I made, which linked representations of intelligent design in science fiction. I initially failed to realize how controversial the topic was, but I subesequently decided that discretion was the better part of valour, and so I declined to continue editing the topic.

  1. Oppose You have been around for over a year, but you have a relatively low number of contributions (517 in total) including 9 to the Wikipedia namespace. I recommend that you acquire more experience in administrative areas, like reporting repeat vandals to WP:AIV, participating in WP:XFD discussions, and tagging pages for deletion on new pages patrol.     To clarify, my oppose has more to do with whether or not you need the tools, given your current and hopeful activities, rather than the quality of your article contributions. You may not need to be an administrator to continue the work you wish to do. Leebo T/C 18:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
  2. Edit-conflict Oppose With only 9 edits in the project space and about 500 edits in total, I am not compelled to support. Questions are not convincing and you don't have the needed experience to use the mop. Try in 6 months with a higher edit count and more participation in the project space (XfDs, AIV, RfA, FAC, etc.). - Anas talk? 18:03, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

  7. Oppose. While I believe you may be a good admin in the future, I do not think you have the necessary experience in general to have a good understanding of how everything works here. I suggest waiting several months and getting a lot more experience under your belt before trying again.
