68.39.174.238 (talk · contribs) – this is a first. A serious admin nomination for an IP adress. This IP has tens of thousands of valuable edits. There are 69 users wanting them to create an account, and would suppport him after just creating an account. I figure, why not try it now. I would like to co-nominate 68.39.174.238 (I'll use User238 for brevity), who many long time English Wikipedians will know is a stellar example of why IP contributions should be examined with the same care as changes that have a username attached to them.

To begin with I would like to address the strange nature of this RFA. It is not a joke to nominate an IP address. It is a minor technical problem that prevents IP addresses from becoming an administrator of a MediaWiki site, however someone with CheckUser capabilities can quickly verify that a new username is indeed the same person as the IP address. Over on Wikisource, an IP address was successfully nominated and assessed based on their long history of IP contributions.*

User238's first edit was on 26 September 2005, and the user has consistently been a typical wikimedian except for the lack of a username; the user is regularly chatting to other users in a productive manner, does gnome work, is a regular on the Wikipedia:Graphic Lab, and is ironically very good at tackling vandalism.

It is quite likely that User238 will continue to want to edit from an IP address, however I think it is advisable that this user has a known alternative account which has sysop capabilities, for the times that this user has occasion to need the extra tools. A sysop account will allow this user go go about their good work with less impediments and perhaps in time they will decide to make use of the sysop account more frequently.

IPs are really people too. I ask that everyone assess this persons contributions fairly, as to whether they will be a benefit to the community with sysop tools at their disposal. John Vandenberg (talk) 03:46, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
