[edit] parameter depending background

Hi,

Is it possible to make the background of a cell in a table depended of a parameter value?

I'm working on a template for national field hockey teams. I'd like to make the template multiple usable, so for countries from Europe, Oceania, Pan-America etc.

The value in the columnheader Continental Championship depends on the 'continent' parameter. Now the cells in this column must depend on this parameter. Example the row 1984, if 'continent' is Oceania i'd like to have the cell in the column Continental Championship stay green (in 1984 there was no Oceania Cup). If 'continent' is Europe than fill the cell with the results of the 1984 ECh.

I got 2 versions, both doesn't give the result I'd like to have.

  • Template text1
1984
{{#switch: {continent} | Europe = {{#if:{}|{} 1984 EC | not participated }} | style="background:#CCFFCC"  }}
}}
  • Template text2
1984
{{#if: {{#expr: {continent} != Europe}} | style="background:#CCFFCC" | {{#switch: {continent} | Europe = {{#if:{}|{} 1984 EC | not participated }} | style="background:#CCFFCC"  }} }}
}}

McSmit 10:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

  • If continent is Oceania, then cell background is #CCFFCC.
  • If continent is Europe and 1984EC is given, then no cell background and the text inside is {} 1984 EC.
  • If continent is Europe and 1984EC is NOT given, then no cell background and the text inside is not participated.
1984
{{#ifeq: {continent} | Oceania | style="background: #CFC;"  }} {{#ifeq: {continent} | Europe | {{#if: { | {} 1984 EC | not participated }}

I haven't tested, but this should work. If it's not working, it would be nice to give me the link for the template you are currently working on :D eDenE 16:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

This problem arrised at the nl.wiki and Fryday eve we found the solution. The solution is close to yours, so may be your right, but I didn't tested your version. Here the code of our solution, it is in Dutch but the codes are the same.
style="background:#{{#switch: {continent} | Europa = EEEEEE | CCFFCC }}"  {{#switch: {continent} | Europa = {{#if:{}|{EK1984} EK 1984 FR-VLAG Lille|geen deelname }} | style="background:#CCFFCC"  }}
Here the link to the Dutch Template. McSmit 22:43, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
I've had this problem myself, and came to the same fix. But: Is there any way to accept both, for example, color = #ff0000 AND color = red? Verisimilus T 15:49, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

4. This user is fascinated by the Harlem renaissance

1-3 would link to History userboxes

[edit] Userbox template request : Custom Degree

Among the University Degree userbox templates, there doesn't appear to be one for specifying a Custom Degree, eg. "This user has a Master of Information Technology Management degree.". Can someone with Template experience please advise and/or implement this?

My best guess is (edit page for source):

XXX or

This user has a XXX degree.

{} This user has a {} degree.

[edit] DCAU

Could there be an external link template to the DCAU Wiki? Plenty of articles here link to that Wiki (Green Arrow, Darkseid), and I think they should be uniform. The template should be similar to Template:Sww. --217.129.169.136 14:32, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

OK, created dcauw (there was already DCAU. Examples are provided on the template's page. —dgiestc 22:27, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
This goes up against the Wikipedia policy at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Examples, which state, among things, "Wikis, including Wikipedia and other wikis sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation are not regarded as reliable sources." There's a whole discussion about a similar Marvel Universe Database here. In any event, before jumping into Project-wide linking, we need to arrive at a consensus. We're jumping the gun here, and these links appear to violate policy. --Tenebrae 14:31, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
I didn't mean to linkspam nor to violate any Wikipedia rule, but there are other linking templates to Wikis, namely Template:Memoryalpha and Template:Sww. I didn't think it was a big deal, since those already violate the Wikipedia policy at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Examples. I suppose I jumped the gun, so I'll ask over the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Comics. --217.129.169.136 14:42, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting vandalism

I've requested this before but it got archived before anybody took up the request, so I'll try again. I could try to make it myself but I have no experience coding more complex templates like this one. The wording and template name are fairly specific this time, so it shouldn't be too much work for someone who knows what they are doing. Richard001 00:42, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Template:un-r (Template:un-reverting) (un=user notice)

Thank you for your efforts to fight vandalism (Optional link to diff). Your attempts to restore the page to a good version have not been fully successful however [Optional comparison of your edit and a full reversion] Please be sure to revert vandalism in future edits. Not reverting runs the risk of missing part of the vandalism, or not restoring text the vandal may have damaged or removed. This results in the vandal succeeding in damaging Wikipedia, which may encourage them to continue. Also, please be sure that you revert to a clean (vandal free) version. Looking at recent diffs in the page history is useful here. Thanks, and please continue helping to keep Wikipedia vandalism free!

To go in Category:User namespace templates

Y Done at Template:un-reverting (I have made Template:un-r redirect there). The syntax is:

Note that all additional fields are optional; the template works fine without them. Now, I didn't want to go outside what you gave me, but is it OK if I add a "" to it? That way it looks more like a user warning, but it's up to you. Also, if anything needs to be fixed, just say so :) Cheers, Arky ¡Hablar! 20:23, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Arky. I find myself giving people this message more and more often these days. Hopefully it will help people fight vandalism more effectively. Richard001 22:34, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] LGBT oddities

On pregnancy, someone's become offended by our use of the pronoun "she"; I've put a notice at the top of the page to the effect of "this article uses she for simplicity's sake; see also male pregnancy and transman for male-identifying pregnancies" or whatever (it was worded better), but it'd be nice to have a generic template to the effect of "This article uses the pronoun [he or she, would be an option] for simplicity's sake, though examples of this occuring in the opposite gender do exist. For more information, see [optional parameter here]", just to let people know so they don't get offended. I bet a lot of people never thought about transmen pre-op becoming pregnant, so it's informative as well as preserving the editor's sanity. Kuronue | Talk 13:26, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm hardly an expert in the subject, but would this have many uses? If there aren't more than 5 or 6 articles that would use such a template, it may be easiest just to copy and change the text that's already there. Mr.Z-man 17:28, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
  • Articles shouldn't be written to account for every possible variation. Doing so will make the prose convoluted and confusing. Truly notable variants can be discussed in their own section/article. If we really end up with a lot of "FooBar in other gender" articles, I'm guessing it would be best to handle them on a case-by-case basis. —dgiestc 18:02, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

There are a ton of examples at Wikipedia:Userboxes. You should be able to make whatever you want without much difficulty. Perhaps you should create a user page before you worry about what templates to add to it. —dgiestc 17:50, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Manipulation template

I would like to add a template that indicates that a Wikipedia article is subject to systematic manipulation by a company or other entity that has multiple user account and tries to subtly bias the article in their direction. Here is my suggestion:

That this is a relevant scenario was shown not only by the WikiScanner, which sadly can only identify IP addresses and is blind to the scenario I mention, but also by the example of leaked MediaDefender mails, that clearly proof that manipulation attempts took place and by looking at the recent edits are still taking place, although on a more subtle level. Manipulation attempts by a group of users with usernames can only be prevented by having other users very carefully looking over all the edits, something that might not happen normally per WP:AGF. I am unsure if this template is already in the correct format and where to submit it to become official, so I am posting it here. --84.178.123.32 10:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Modification of Template:Cite book

I request a modification to to add an alternative to the last= and first= fields. They make the template useless for authors from cultures where people put their family name first. This is not unusual :-) . Ideally a simple author= field that substitutes for the other two. Thank you. Seektruthfromfacts 01:47, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Summary style template

This is one we seem to have a need for, but I can't find anything similar around. To be placed on the article that should be summarized:

This article should be summarized in (target article).

And on the target article:

This article should include a summary of (article to be summarized).

I've recently seen a suggestion of merging Criticism of Greenpeace with Greenpeace. A merge is clearly not the solution, yet nobody seems aware of what the obvious answer is. This template would be useful in such situations. It could be placed on the talk page or article page, like similar templates. I suggest the name Template:Summarizein and Template:Summarizefrom. It could even be a single template with a parameter for choosing which version, though this would probably be simpler. Richard001 10:07, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Sorry Richard. Sync already exists. Happy editing, Arky ¡Hablar! 21:55, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Ah, never seen that one before... Thanks. I'll create a redirect for to it.

Actually, they're not really the same, are they? One is saying 'harmonize', the other is saying 'a summary of x is omitted; please include one'. Is there any way to 'harmonize' these two into one template? If I added it to the greenpeace example above editors might be confused as to what I was suggesting. Harmonize would generally be for situations where content is present in both articles, but doesn't say the same thing. It could at the furthest stretch mean this, but it would certainly be a source of potential confusion. I've tried broadening the scope by editing the template, but I think it might be better just to create a new pair. Richard001 06:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Hmm...I see your point. I'll create the template then :) Cheers, ARkY // ¡HaBLaR! 20:05, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Okay, template created at Summarize. Cheers, ARkY // ¡HaBLaR! 20:38, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. One last thing - would you be able to remove the 'article=' code? It's always better to keep it as simple as possible. Cheers. Richard001 10:26, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Y Done here. Cheers, ARkY // ¡HaBLaR! 03:35, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Wait, I didn't mean to remove the field entirely, just the code 'article =', so it would be |to|article name, not |to|article=article name. Without the article field it's rather confusing as to what article is intended. Richard001 08:49, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Okay, Richard: Y Done. I've made it so that the article field no longer needs the article= prefix, and each field has the potential to work independently from the other (for example, the "to/from" field could be filled out with no article, or vice versa, and yes, they both work fine together =D). Happy editing, ARkY // ¡HaBLaR! 19:12, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infant age

I need help creating a new template for infant age or possibly a combination birth date and age template. I have looked at the templates at Category:Date mathematics templates. I think a template converted age for infants under 1 year to ## mos. and ## days and switched to ## yrs and ## mos. from say 1-3 and then just years above. However, maybe I need two new templates for age in months and days and Age in years and months. Where can I seek such help. I have sought help at

  1. Birth date and age - Template_talk:Birth_date_and_age#Infant_parameterization
  2. Age in years and days - Template_talk:Age_in_years_and_days#Infant_age
  3. User current age's leading editor - User_talk:Alfakim#Infant_age_template

I also recently posted at Category_talk:Date_mathematics_templates#Infant_age, but that page does not have an active edit history.

The help desk directed me here.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:34, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem with integrating the parameter into the first two templates provided is that they're fully protected. The userbox should be relatively easy, though. However, because of the protection issue on the first two templates, you'd have to go to their talk pages, place an editprotected tag on them, and then gain consensus for the change. This scenario would make the template operate like and work off a main template. Otherwise, I could create a totally new template that would do the same thing without being a parameter on a template. Hope this helps, and happy editing, ( arky ) 23:30, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
It seems the people who edit these pages are not in favor of further parameterization of the templates. Therefore, I would appreciate either
  1. a new template in which age formating can be parameterized with Y=Y/N M=Y/N D=Y/N.
  2. new separate templates for age in months and days and Age in years and months.
  3. a new template that parametrically chooses either age in months or age in months and days for below age=1 and age in either years and months or just months for ages 1-2 or 1-3 and just age above.
  4. a new 2006 template that automatically chooses either age in months or age in months and days for below age=1 and age in either years and months or just months for ages 1-2 or 1-3 and just age above.
  5. a new template that parametrically chooses either age in months or age in months and days for below age=1 and age in either years and months or just months for ages 1-2 or 1-3 and just age above.
  6. a new 2006 template that automatically chooses either age in months or age in months and days for below age=1 and age in either years and months or just months for ages 1-2 or 1-3 and just age above.

It is possible something else closely related to these ideas would work as well you are the programmer and anything you can come up with would be helpful.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 12:17, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

  • I think it makes sense to modify Birth date and age to show days and or months for sub-year ages. That being said, it might be a bit tricky to make it work, and it would have to be tested rigorously with many possible combinations of variables in that template. Only when you're positive it will have no effect on existing usage should you use editprotected or make a request at WP:REQT. —dgiestc 22:53, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Y Done at age for infant. The syntax is

For example, becomes: &&&&&&&&&07227081984 years and { becomes: &&&&&&&&&07266351994 years (results of template bolded for visual purposes here only). Cheers, ( arky ) 00:24, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:11, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Wait. It is not working right. The month seems to be 1 too high for 1 or over=no. Also it only counts months after dropping years. Suppose someone wanted to say they were 12 months and 10 days it would only say 10 days.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:16, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Y Done (I think so anyway) Sorry about the issues with the template...I'm 99% sure all the kinks are worked out, but if you still experience problems, just let me know :) Happy editing, ( arky ) 19:53, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. It looks good at Tiger Woods. However, its own page at Template:Age_for_infant is screwed up. Also, is it possible to have an abbreviation parameter so that |abbr=yes would read x mos. y dys. and abbr=no would read as it is?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:42, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Sure, I can add that feature. Also, the reason the template is messed up on its own page is because it uses mathematical expressions, and, since no variables are defined on the page itself, the template freaks out and displays all sorts of error messages (I hope that makes sense =D). Cheers, ( arky ) 02:23, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Should I go to the help desk to get someone to cleanup the page? I don't think other templates in that category have the same problem so it seems to me that this should be fixable.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:05, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, you're right, it could be fixed. I've fixed the formatting on the page, added a template documentation, and am still working on that last parameter; it should be up and running very soon. Cheers, ( arky ) 18:54, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Variation on tlrow

I was wondering if someone that's good with templates can help me. I'm trying to create a function template that works like tlrow but a little differently. What I want is a template that does this:

input:

output:

|-
|T<br /><br />
|T<br />x

This uses tlx and . T is the template name, x, y, and z are the parameters. "myTemp" would be the name of this template, of course. This template should also add |category= automatically (an empty string).

I've been trying to create this myself, but I never made a template before, and I'm stuck. Here's what I got so far → my sandbox Feel free to mess with it. Thanks. Rocket000 06:14, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Euroleague roster template

Hi. I created an Euroleague roster template, very similar to the NBA one. The problem is that in Europe there are a lot of players with two nationalities, and in these templates you can only specify one. Could you add an option to add another one if it is necessary. For example, in the Template:CB Girona, Ariel McDonald should be american and slovenian. Thank you! :-) MontanNito 01:26, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kirby

I request that I have a template that says: This user is a big fan of the Kirby series, With a picture of Kirby, or something like that.Green Kirby 01:47, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Audio requests

Would someone be able to add the capacity to have subcategories given in audio requests, as with requested pictures? Something like animals would produce 'Category:Requested audio of animals'. The category is approaching its second page and separating e.g. music from zoological requests is very difficult. Richard001 07:50, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dita Von Teese

Is there any chance of a userbox for fans of Dita Von Teese? something with a Martini Glass as the image, and text that, "this user is a fan of Burlesque and the Art of Teese", I'm not sure how these things work (if anyone can tell me how to make this myself, that'd be better), but I think this'd be nice.  Doktor  Wilhelm  21:19, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User warning template for an editor who cited a non-reliable source

I'm looking for a template similar to Needsource, but for cases where an editor did provide a source but the source was not considered reliable. If such a template doesn't exist, would someone be so kind as to create one? -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:30, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ancient event

There are many articles documenting ancient historical events about which facts are scarce, conflicting and/or subject to debate. There are several competing chronologies making it impossible to accurately date ancient events. The exact dates and details of many ancient events may never be known. This fact is a recurring problem for editors and unless stated within individual articles, not apparent to the reader. A template similar to current and future is needed to warn the reader that an article documents or is related to such an event. Donnie Love 23:05, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Templates for entire media franchises

I had this idea to create templates for whole media franchises. I thought this when I was monitoring the pages for large media empires like The Simpsons and Pokémon, as they had many different types of media. I thought up of some fields and wrote them down, I'm looking for someone who could decode the HTML for it if it's a good idea.

{{Infobox media/Game
| title = Game titles (bracket release years beside titles)
| developer = Developer names
| publisher = Publisher names
| genre = Main genre of games (exclude spin-offs)
| platforms = Platforms
| released = Release date of first game.

{{Infobox media/Other

[edit] Abba userbox

ABBA Mamma Mia!
This user loves Abba.

I've done a bit of snooping around and I haven't been able to find an Abba userbox. (I'm a little surprised actually.) I've created one here User:Supasaru/Sandbox and I like its simple look (as shown here).

My question is this: Can someone help me with the whole Category:Wikipedians who like xyz thing? As far as I can tell, that category doesn't exist, and I'm not sure how to create it and then include that in my userbox. Feel free to play in my sandbox. • Supāsaru 18:11, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, none of the other "user is a fan of band" userboxes (listed on Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Bands) have this kind of categorization, so I don't think you need to start a new one here. Andrwsc 20:09, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for checking for me. I just assumed that because userboxes for TV shows (like ones for The Simpsons & for Buffy) added a , so music-related userboxes would do the same. • Supāsaru 21:47, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:WP conlangs

I did a fairly perfunctory clone from Template:WP languages. I'd like someone who knows what they're doing to go through it and

  • check that all appropriate links are changed (one gotcha: WP:CL uses the WP:Lang infobox)
  • prettify as relevant
  • add an 'importance' grading in addition to the 'quality' one - e.g. Template:WP Sexuality
  • add a usage page and/or link somewhere in the template explaining how to uses its paramaters - e.g. Template:Uk-crime
  • add an infobox on WP:CL a la WP:Lang (top right) showing totals and links to categories of articles by relevance & by quality
  • make it handle assessment comments subpages
  • make sure all relevant categories exist (e.g. I had to manually add (and <-- doesn't work without nowiki tags, wtf?))
  • anything else that'd improve the template or project page (or the interaction between the two)

Please feel free to comment here or on my talk page if any of that is unclear. While I'm a programmer, I'm not much of a designer and I'm not familiar enough with the fancy style wikification used in templates to be comfortable doing this myself.

As a higher-level suggestion, it would be good to have a metatemplate for this, so that the template code could just look like this (psuedocoding...):

Ditto for the project page infobox of articles by quality/relevance, etc. That way, it wouldn't have to be redone a bunch, and the code could be consolidated into something that's better maintained.

Thanks! Sai Emrys ¿? 01:11, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

I've made a pass at it in Template:WP conlangs sandbox, but I've messed up something or other. I can't tell what. [edit] Need parameter to suppress two table rows

In Family Guy character, I'm trying to add an optional format parameter where "format = short" will suppress the "Character information" and "Show information" bars. Default (if format is empty, not given, or !="short") should be to display these rows (in other words, unchanged from current).

Have tried surrounding these sections with an #if statement, and substituting for pipes, but I'm not seeing the solution. I've gotten some (to me) paradoxical results that lead me to believe I don't understand what's happening. Sandbox. / edg 01:57, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tifinagh

Hi! I'd like a template that shows words in Tifinagh (a language that uses a script most people do not have on their computer) using like Template:Hiero, which shows hieroglyphs. Becasue 'till now, most articles have images showing these words. This will be mostly used by articles about places. The letters can be found on commons:Tifinagh, and, as you can see, the Unicode letters do not show up. Thanks in advance. --escondites 10:38, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Ooh, good question. Hieroglyphics are supported with the help of WikiHiero, a MediaWiki extension. Tifinagh has unicode code points so if you're not seeing it that most likely means you don't have any fonts installed which support it. For most multilingual script on Wikipedia, we just rely on the user having the necessary font installed and sometimes show images alongside. Hieroglyphs use a special extension because as far as I know they don't have unicode support. To support what you're asking for I can think of three ways:
  1. Create or modify a MediaWiki extension like WikiHeiro which supports Tifinagh - Requires PHP coding skill and need to get consensus to install those updates
  2. Create a template which parses your input and substitutes images - Requires the ParserFunctions extension which is also not installed
  3. Create a template which handles only a single character at a time and call it repeatedly. - Inelegant and runs up against some technical limitations
Really you should double-check you have font support, and if you're still having trouble, ask at WP:VPT. You may later wish to add a warning like the one used for Burmese characters. —dgiestc 08:07, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Museum Catergory and Info boxes

I would like to make a couple of template boxes. The first is a infobox for Museums. The box should include Title, Image of the Museum, Name of Museum, Date Founded, Location, Type of Museum (i.e. Natural History, Art, etc.), Director, Curator, Endowment, Logo, & Motto/Slogan. This box should be a single column and the first row should use the color grey.

The second box is a catergory box for museums. Information in that box could include links to catergories of types of museums.

Regarding the first one, would this suit your needs? — xDanielx T/C\R 09:14, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Link colors can be improved

I would like to suggest changing the link colors from blue to a more readable color (gray). If you look at Wikipedia's main page, it looks like a mess. This is because many words are LINKS, some are BOLDED, some are black others are blue...

I know this may sound ridiculous, but changing some of these colors could make the main site (an the rest of wikipedia) LOOK CLEANER.

Another simple but important example: Why the list of dozens of languages, when all you need is a simple pull-down menu? You have a link in the page for Slovenščina, that only a small percentage of the wiki readers need.

Let's clean this up a little and make Wikipedia look less like Yahoo.com.

Best Regards, "Cenora"

[edit] New Template Request

I'm wanting a Template for my user subpages, although i haven't created any at the moment i was trying to find a template which i wanted but wikipedia hasn't got it, at the moment my userpage isn't that organize which I'm trying to sort out.

On some of the other user pages, i've noticed that they have layouts and have organized their subpages, example Misza13 I'm wanting a similar template but different and coveres the entire userpage, and with a different background style, to suit the username title SKYNET which could be based on the computer code background or the matrix style where any user or non-registered user could see.

Although there are no subpages for my user yet, i want to have the ability to add new pages and links on the template which expands, but for other pages the boxes could be a collapsing box at the bottom of the template.

Is this possible SKYNET X7000 (talk) 09:39, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] house md episode template

It's a template for the House series. The episode list has a column called "Final Diagnosis" which some of us that frequent the list think is a spoiler, but others think enhances the list. I want to propose that the diagnosis go under the story summary, in a table that defaults as hidden. The part that I can't figure out is how to include a nested table in the current table. Here is what I have done so far: Template:Episode_list/House and here is what I based it on: Template:Episode_list. You'll notice that I'm also updating the original template so that this one has variables that are more specific to the House list (e.g., Director instead of Aux2).Crazytonyi (talk) 18:36, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

If people don't want to see spoilers, they should know to not read episode summaries here. The fine layout of the article shouldn't be compromised for this reason. Splitting off a template to cater to a specific TV series is generally not a good idea, and this would apply to other TV series as well. –Pomte 19:24, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
That is not a reasonable point of view, I'm sorry. People go to episode summaries to find out information such as air date, title, and, obviously, a simple summary. Many people want this information before they watch the show. Having the centerpiece of the show, the answer to the riddle, revealed before you watch an episode, is just unfair. People should at least be warned that the entire page is a spoiler. The only reason that column was added was because it was suggested by the featured list committee. I don't want to just join sides on the talk page saying it should be taken down, I want to help solve the problem. Having that information as hidden is the best, and most stylish, thing I can think of. To simply dismiss this idea with "these people just shouldn't use this page" is unfair and very unrealistic. If it's too much trouble to help me make the template, that's fine. Don't help out. But please don't pass it off as what is best for the list. A good summary should not ruin an entire episode, which this list does.Crazytonyi (talk) 19:44, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
The spoiler template was deleted after numerous painfully long debates, so readers cannot now be warned about spoilers. But I think it's pretty obvious there are spoilers on the entire page when you go to List of House episodes and notice the column on the right for the first season at the top.
The hidden nested tables can certainly be done, but I fear they'll eventually get reverted. Please refer to the people at Wikipedia talk:Spoiler to look for consensus on this issue.
Practically, I don't understand why people would come here for air date, title, summary, etc. There are plenty of other places to look for this info, particularly the official FOX website and various entertainment websites, where it's their job to not spoil things in the summary. Right now, I am watching a particular show and making sure that I don't go anywhere near the articles for it, because Wikipedia is indifferent and not necessarily looking out for the interests of its readers, so I think it is realistic for people to not come here if they don't want the show ruined. –Pomte 22:56, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User Sandbox Template Request

Hello, I am requesting that a new template be created for those users, such as myself, who want a template asking people not to edit there personal user sandbox.

Thank you,
Ianonavy (talk) 00:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: Okay, well since no one responded to my request, I found out that you can create templates and created one. Now I am simply requesting that it be added to every User Sandbox. I don't know how to do this, so I am asking for help to create/find a page that lists all the user sandboxes. If it's possible, I'd like every user to have a user sandbox to be created. ANOTHER NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: I'm sorry. I am an idiot. There was already a user sandbox template. In that case, I simply editted the template and deleted the one I created.

Others may have cause to edit your user sandbox, for instance, if you categorize it into a mainspace category. –Pomte 13:32, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Only certain tags are needed as listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Do any of those apply for the image you want to upload? I do not know whether a new tag should be created. Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free is probably a better place to ask. I found from an old thread that the government copyrights images for 50 years. –Pomte 14:04, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Carnaval Template

I would like a template that cites all the samba schools and all the associations related to samba. The background can be blue. --Nadir D Steinmetz 12:57, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

There are no articles on each of the Samba schools. The articles in Category:Samba are about different types of things, and so may be better left as a category. 99.227.7.124 (talk) 16:21, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Hum, did you happen to check Category:Brazilian Carnival? --Nadir D Steinmetz 23:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

No, I didn't, because the external links in Samba school doesn't give the impression. 99.227.7.124 (talk) 12:04, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, than check! It actually does. --Nadir D Steinmetz 12:06, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

So the box may look something like this. Please make corrections if I've got it wrong, or add more articles.
Unless there's a special reason for the background being blue, this is the standard way to present a navigational template. 99.227.7.124 (talk) 12:16, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I've been working on a userbox that I put on my userpage, and I'm mostly happy with its appearance, but I'd like for it to be the same size as the other boxes, and I can't seem to manage it. Can someone here help? Kafka Liz (talk) 18:34, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

If you are talking about User:Kafka Liz/Userboxes/Nazar, then you only have to change the picture, which is to big. Try id = . If the picture still should be to big, reduce the number of pixel (px).--Thw1309 (talk) 20:18, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, it looks much better now. I'm sorry I forgot to mention which one it was. I was trying to change the wrong parameter before. Thanks again, Kafka Liz (talk) 21:08, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
I hate to bug you again, but the box seems to lose its right-hand border when it's on my userpage, although it shows up fine at User:Kafka Liz/Userboxes/Nazar. Is there anything I can do about this? Thanks, Kafka Liz (talk) 21:21, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ancestry template

I'm in need of the creation of a template bar like the one below only with the navbox "edit", "view", and "discussion" links on the lefthand side and that can expand or contract to allow it to sit neatly beside a vertical infobox or royal family template usually placed on an article's righthand side. The bar I've included below stays one fixed size and does not display well with other templates in an article. Please let me know what alternatives are available to correct this issue. Thanks. --Caponer (talk) 19:21, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Current template mentioned above:

To standardize, use Navbox. Change the name value when you create the actual template. If you want it to always default to collapse, set state = collapsed. The far right colour may be too bright for easy readability.
Pomte 14:06, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Is there any way that something can be created that does not interfere with the vertical boxes on the sides of articles which does not entail making an individual ancestry page for each person? Like top and bottom code or something to that effect, where the leftmost edges of the horizontal boxes act like the margins of a page. Charles 01:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
If you are talking about familytree, it may take even more time to think about how to make that work. I don't know what you mean by interference with the side boxes. Please provide an example. If you find that boxes overlap, separate them with something like . –Pomte 01:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
See for example here: Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh#Ancestors. My display is 1680 pixels wide and the ancestry box is running under the vertical aligned infoboxes on the side. Without the div headers and footers, the ancestry is inline with the rest of the text and wraps before at the leftmost edges of those side boxes. With it though, it moves it down until it clears the bottom of the infoboxes on the side. Can start and end headers be created that account for and avoid that problem? Charles 02:25, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
I've wrapped that example with code that isn't ideal, but is a compromise that should work reasonably well for everyone. I can create ahnentafel top and ahnentafel bottom. –Pomte 21:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Creating ahnentafel top and bottom would be wonderful! :-) Charles 18:57, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Done. –Pomte 19:13, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you! For some reason though, as seen at James II of England, the change made moves the ancestry all the way to the bottom of the page. Charles 19:46, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Needs photo functionality

I can't see exactly how this is done myself so I'd like to request someone add a '|needs-photo' field to WPNZ and Books. The respective request categories will be Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New Zealand and Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of publications. Richard001 (talk) 07:49, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Do you want a "notice" field in these templates as well? or do you want automatic inclusion of the banner New Zealand below the project banner, or do you just want to add the pages to the category, without having a notice within or under the project template at all ? --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:33, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, just do what most other templates do I guess. They normally seem to have the message embedded within the banner below the other ratings (e.g. plants). If the others don't like it, it can always be changed. Richard001 (talk) 03:54, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Blank line in "hidden" template

Currently, if the MLB Template is "hidden", it has an blank line below its headline, looking quite erratic. Could someone find and delete the code that provokes this, please? And repead it at NFL, too? Thanks. FloK (talk) 20:49, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't see what the problem is. Both navboxes seem just fine for me. Which browser are you using, and on which wikipedia pages do you notice the problem? --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:29, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Internet Explorer, but don't ask which version. My case looks like Image:Blank line in "hidden" template.JPG (on Major North American professional sports leagues). Thanks for looking after it... FloK (talk) 20:59, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
I discovered the problem. It's your Internet Explorer, which can not show it right. When you press hide, it removes the single boxes and their content, but it does not remove the borders, which form a stripe on the bottom. It's the same problem with the other infoboxes, but it is worse here, because there are so many borders. You only have to correct the first line of the table code. Instead of cellspacing="2", you write cellspacing="0". There's one disadvantage: Now there are no borders, if the infobox is opened. Therefore I think, it should stay the way it is, because it's not fair to "improve" the performance of one browser on the price of a severe limitation of the performance of all other browsers.--Thw1309 (talk) 11:26, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Online Etymology Dictionary

I always find myself citing this thing, but as far as I can tell we don't have a template to make it easier. [edit] Frazione infobox subst?

Someone's done a cute subst that allows you to copy and paste the Comune infobox template for Italian towns from it.wiki and it automagically turns into an en.wiki Infobox CityIT infobox, with the field names translated appropriately - Arvier is an example. Would anyone like to do a similar subst for the it.wiki it:Template:Frazione template seen on eg it:Carcegna - I don't think there's an English equivalent target infobox, so you'd have to make that as well as the subst.
Whilst I'm here, I don't suppose anyone fancies making the Comune susbt a bit cleverer, and get it to translate month names used for the saint's day? So 17 gennaio becomes 17 January and so on. I'm not sure if there's scope to get a bit cleverer translating the saint's name as well, but just the months would be a big help (qv the Arvier article. ;-/) FlagSteward (talk) 14:54, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

I can transform the template Frazione for you. You only have to translate the following terms: nomeFrazione, immagine, didascalia, siglaRegione, siglaProvincia, nomeDelComune, linkStemma, altitudine, abitanti, cap, prefisso, nomeAbitanti, patrono, festivo, sito. I think, I could guess what they mean, but it is better to know for sure. --Thw1309 (talk) 08:23, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Great, cheers. You want :
    • official_name, image_skyline, image_caption, region, province, comune, image_crest, elevation, population_total, postalcode, telephone, gentilic, saint, saint_day, website
the original Region and Province fields are abbreviations (sigla), it would be better for en.wikipedians to expand them but abbreviations would be fine as a starting point. population_as_of would be a good idea to add. Thanks again. FlagSteward (talk) 18:34, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Just a tiny little thing I've spotted on subst:Comune, it would be great if it could replace the thousand separator in population_total, so 4.123 is replaced by 4,123. FlagSteward (talk) 12:38, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Changing the template of towns in Germany to the style of the Frazione template, I try to create a template, which reacts to both, italian and english input, to enable you to transfer the template from it:wikipedia, using the Italian terms, but also to create new boxes in en:wikipedia, using English terms. After having created the regions, I wanted to try this part of the infobox, using the input of Carcegna. I discovered, that it:wikipedia does not use the real names, but templates. So, I will have to create a different template for every region and province. This means, about 70 templates. I fear, you will have to be very patient. You can view my progress on user:Thw1309/Sandbox --Thw1309 (talk) 15:52, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Ouch, ouch, ouch - I didn't mean to be that much trouble. Can you reuse some of the templates used by Template:Comune or doesn't it work like that? FlagSteward (talk) 16:04, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
I want it to be perfect. This means, it understands Italian and English and will translate Italian names to English names. I'm working on fr:wikipédia. There I transfer basic informations of German villages from de:wikipedia. Therefore I know, what a stupid work it is, to have to transfer every single information. In the end it's easier to create a template, which enables you to copy in it:wikipedia and to put the same unchanged block to en:wikipedia. It's the same with the region and province templates. It makes a bit work now, but it will improve the template. Everything no problem, it only takes some time.--Thw1309 (talk) 18:08, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template colliding with infobox, triggering nabox state

There is a new template to provide a unified, table-based look for album track listings and I could use a little help, in order to work out a few remaining kinks. For one thing, the template is prone to overlap with album infoboxes at low resolutions (below 1024), while ideally, it would properly adapt or be bumped down. The latter is probably more desirable/easier to implement, given that all lists in an article are supposed to maintain the same page width percentage. On a lesser note, the template triggers the collapsed state of navboxes, since it also inherits the collapsible class. Can this behavior somehow be suppressed while retaining collapsible functionality for the track lists? Here is an article that currently employs the template, I'm looking forward to any suggestions and possible solutions. - Cyrus XIII (talk) 06:05, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Categorization bug in Infobox

Template:Infobox Indian Jurisdiction contains, among many other variables, a variable "state_name" that can contain the name of a state or Union Territory. This is used both for display and for categorization. If the template is used with state_name=Delhi, the article is placed in Category:Cities and towns in Delhi. That category, however, has been redirected to Category:Cities and towns in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Can the template be fixed to recategorize those articles? --Russ (talk) 13:17, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

This looks to me as a prime example as to why you shouldn't use infobox and navbox templates to do article categorization. I can implement a "dirty" fix that is specific to Delhi, but I do advise to move all the categories into the specific articles. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:36, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Postage stamps and postal history

Resolved.

The current template is getting out of hand and currently has too many redlinks, though we can only expect the real content to grow, though I doubt it will get as full as this one Template:Protected Areas of California. Before replacing the current template I have created a draft that divides the world by continent, but there are some issues that might be resolved with your help. Is it possible to colour the group name boxes the same colour as the legend associated with the continents' image? The subgroup name boxes are extending too far to the right (Japanese Post Abroad) unless there is enough content to stop it from extending right (British Post Abroad). Can the width of this subgroup name box be controlled in some way? TIA ww2censor (talk) 17:05, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

The draft has now been placed into the current template, so if anyone can do any work on it, please use the current template as the draft will be deleted soon. ww2censor (talk) 17:42, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Now a major template problem: the updated template has some odd error in it that causes major problems with the display of the Portal:Philately page and the template on the page. Removing the template fixes the issue, so I presume it must be something in the template. Can someone look at this please? Cheers ww2censor (talk) 21:36, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Below the differences are not terrible, but in some cases they can be enormous.

Also can the box caption be center/left/right capable or centered by default?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:06, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
To keep the same height, I need to know the size of the images. Unfortunately, Wikipedia doesn't provide any method to do so, and you will need to manually calculate the ratio and enter the width... :( I'll let you updated if such thing can be done in the future.
Other than that, I named all parameters, so that it won't break existing usage, if it gets updated in the future (and less confusion when you use the template). I added "box_caption_align" per your request, as well as "box_caption_position" and "box_caption_background" for better presentation. I've updated the documentation (and your examples above), so please follow the usage there. eDenE 14:37, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
How about a different logic. Is there a way to leave the vertical alignment universal image size to equate width and make the horizontal equate height. I.E., is there an image sizing command that could be based on height instead of width?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:20, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Panorama simple does that— you have to enter the height and width of the original image and the height of the desired image. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 13:13, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Template Request

Hello, I had just made a template about the Russian Armed Forces and I need you guys to help expand and make that templat. It is located in "Armed Forces of the Russian Federation." Just look it up and then expand the existing template that I had made which is above the military of Europe. And then expand it. I am not an experienced member and I am a first time user of Wikipedia. So please expand the template and let me know within a few hours or days. But please send me a message soon!!! [koov|12:04PM] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Koov (talkcontribs) 12:06, 16 April 2008

I'm not sure what you're asking for. If you want the template to be expanded all the time, simply put state = show. See the template documentation, especially Other section for more detailed description on state parameter. Beside, please use ~~~~, instead of manually putting [koov|time] :D eDenE 17:30, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Political division wikilink template

Hello. I've been editing wikipedia for some years already and found a certain task very repetitive to make. That deals with making wikilinks with political divisions.

For example. If I will make a wikilink for my hometown Candelaria, Zambales, i need to have the following syntax: Candelaria, Zambales.

I have worked tremendously with articles which have links to local political subdivisions. That's why I'm requesting a template that will make the job easier. Let's say the new template I'm requesting will take the name pdiv. Then let a1, a2, a3, ..., an represent the political subdivisions from innermost then outward. Then,

= a1, a2, a3, ..., an

Example:
Orange County = Orange County, California = Orange County, California
Kalayaan = Kalayaan, Palawan = Kalayaan, Palawan

I'm requesting that the template should not be limited to "child, mother" pattern for there might be "child, mother, grandmother" or higher order patterns in wikipedia (though I don't know one). Also, I don't really know how templates are created, that's why all the pdiv syntax I used is just for illustrative instruction. Just please make a template which will do the job easier.

N Not done, but with a possible edit :) city probably does the trick, but I can add to the code that's already there if you want grandparent functionality. Cheers, ( arky ) 16:50, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lists or tables adequate for the purpose intended

In sections of articles like Katakana#Nations and False cognate#Examples, lists or tables of examples that for purposes of the article are best taken to be illustrative and not comprehensive can get out of hand as each person tries to add his own favorite example. After discussion in Talk, it would be nice to have a template preceding such a list or table to the effect that "The following list or table of illustrations or examples has been deemed adequate for the purpose of this article. Please do not add new items to the list without providing a reason in Talk and allowing reasonable time for discussion of your explanation." There could be an optional argument for a description of reasonable exceptions. For example, for the Nations section in the Katakana article, a reasonable exception would be described as "Exception: as of April 2008, this table is lacking in examples for Latin America, Africa, and Asia. If these examples are still lacking, feel free to add some." —Largo Plazo (talk) 16:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ratchet Request

I'm not sure if this is hard, but Can I have one that says:This user loves Ratchet and clank games and has a picture of ratchet?RogueMad2 (talk) 06:57, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Y Done. I couldn't find an image to use as fair use images cannot be used in userboxes, so I had to use 'R&C' instead. The userbox can be found here. RichardΩ612 Ɣ |ɸ 11:39, May 11, 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Frazione infobox subst? II

Hi guys. Back in February I request a frazione infobox template for Italian parishes, and another template to allow easy substing of the it.wiki equivalent. Thw1309 made a start but then seems to have been distracted, or tried to be overambitious. Would someone like to take up the reins? This is the relevant bit of the original request :

Someone's done a cute subst that allows you to copy and paste the Comune infobox template for Italian towns from it.wiki and it automagically turns into an en.wiki Infobox CityIT infobox, with the field names translated appropriately - Arvier is an example. Would anyone like to do a similar subst for the it.wiki it:Template:Frazione template seen on eg it:Carcegna - I don't think there's an English equivalent target infobox, so you'd have to make that as well as the subst.
There ended up being more discussion of what was needed in the original thread. FlagSteward (talk) 15:28, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] websites

Would someone please edit this template to allow assessments. I don't want to set up a whole assessment scheme yet, especially as I don't consider myself a member of this inactive project, but allowing them to be made would be a start. Richard001 (talk) 10:21, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Y Done. Tested, works fine. RichardΩ612 Ɣ |ɸ 11:47, May 11, 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GMO

I have searched high and low, extensive google searches and searches of userboxes pages on wikipedia but alas I cannot find a userbox on Genetically modified foods and animals. I would like a userbox which says something like "This user opposes Genetic Modification of plants and animals." and maybe a second userbox saying "This user does not consume GMO foods." I would be extremely grateful if someone could make up these two userboxes. If someone makes them up feel free to display them for other users to also use.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 17:12, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Y Done

This user opposes the Genetic Modification of plants and animals.

This user does not consume GM foods.

[edit] Title wikilink template

I'm looking for a template that creates a simple wikilink to a predefined subpage ("hardcoded" in the actual template) using a similarly predefined description. I'd like it to be positioned where coord places itself when display=title is applied. So if the subpage was defined as "target" and the description as "targetdescription", the result of transcluding the template here would be targetdescription (but placed in the top right corner). Makes sense? Best wishes/ Pax:Vobiscum (talk) 16:20, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Y Done This should fit the bill nicely. Parameter 1 is the name of the subpage, parameter 2 is the text that you want displayed. Feel free to contact me if you have any problems. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 20:02, May 17, 2008 (UTC)
Perfect, thanks alot! Pax:Vobiscum (talk) 22:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Can someone plz create a userbox that says: This user thinks Miley Cyrus ROCKS!!

with Image:Breakout cd cover.jpg on the left side thx Ps i have no clue how 2 make 1

--Meliss402 (talk) 20:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Y Done, however the image you specified cannot be used in userboxes due to it being non-free/fair use. Therefore, I had to use Image:Mileydog.PNG instead. The userbox is here, if you need any more help, please feel free to contact me. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 21:23, May 19, 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Math equation templates

At WT:WPM, we are trying to make templates that would allow us to add links to equations mentioned in the text. For example:

[1] 2 = 2

Using [{}] , we can prove whatever, again by [{}] .
Instead of a caret, we would like a number that will not be affected by the insertion/deletion of other equations. To see our various attempts, see here, here, here, Template:EquationRef, Template:EquationNote, Template:eqref, and Template:eqlabel. Jkasd 16:46, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Note: all functionality from Eqlabel and Eqref has been moved over to EquationRef and EquationNote. silly rabbit (talk) 18:58, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
