[edit] Mayor vs Supervisor in Geobox Settlement

The following is a summary of the question and answer from the Help Desk. I would be most appreciative if someone could help. Thanks. Truthanado 14:53, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Many of the Town articles use the Geobox Settlement template, which contains a Mayor field. However, in many towns (e.g.-those in New York State), the town leader has the title Town Supervisor, not Mayor. Could someone please explain how to use the Geobox so that it says "Supervisor" when needed? Thanks. Truthanado 22:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
As far as I know, a new template would have to be made. Fields cannot be changed as needed for templates. Doing so voids the field and it just doesn't show up on the page. Go to Wikipedia:Requested templates to request this. LaraLoveT/C 13:45, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
The left column tags of the Geobox Settlement can be changed from their defaults. In this case, "Mayor" is the default when the parameter mayor or leader is used. However, in the case where a municipal leader is not mayor, this can be changed by the following code:
  | leader_type = Supervisor
  | leader = Bob Johnson
If you want to see an example of usage in an article, check out Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania. This is one of the reasons I'm a big advocate of the Geobox series of templates, they are very customizable to meet the specifics of an article, yet still maintain clean and unified look across all articles using Geoboxes. Many thanks. I tried it in Pittsford (town), New York and it works great. Truthanado 15:35, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Wen/ Sacred Heart (Scrubs)

Can you please make me a template that says "This user is an attending at Sacred Heart" and will have DRWEN.jpg at the lest side of it.

tURBO 05:09, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I put it on your talk page thesublime514talk • 00:46, July 13, 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fundamental engineering topics

Would it help to have a template covering the fundamental topics in engineering ? It will include topics such as,

These are some of the suggested topics which almost every engineer learns during his freshman (1st) year at an engineering school.

I have added a link to this request in the engineering portal talk page. -- Myth (Talk) 18:50, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Don't think it could hurt - sounds like a good idea. Compare with the 'basic topics in evolution', for example. I would also add mathematical modelling as well, and there might be others (perhaps some programming and CAD, maybe professional development?). Richard001 02:57, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Here's a rough draft of the requested template, Template:Engineering fundamentals. I have never created a template before, so this one is just a copy-edit of another template. -- Myth (Talk) 05:29, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Looks alright to me. I created my first template in a similar fashion. I think the categorization needs work though - I don't think templates go in normal categories, they belong in template categories generally. Have a look for something suitable. Richard001 22:47, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Quantify

I would like an in-line "quantify" template, like {{who}} or {{when}}, so that statements such as "X is the tallest...", "Y is the fastest..." or "Z is a large..." can have a request appended for relevant figure to be quoited. Thank you. Andy Mabbett 20:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[ [ text here] ] — What should it say? thesublime514talk • 00:54, July 13, 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. Something like "please quantify this statement" or "this statement should be quantified". Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 20:55, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
I think they're supposed to be as short as possible. Hmm. Most of these automatically include the pages to which they're applied in a category, but I'm not sure if there's a Quantify-type category. Maybe one should be made.
Not sure which combination would be best. Also, the link pipes to Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias (this couldn't be the best place to link, but some of the other in-line templates linked there), but I really don't know where it should go. thesublime514talk • 23:45, July 15, 2007 (UTC)
What about "please quantify"? I don't think a talk page link is necessary. Category:Articles lacking quantities should be OK. What about linking to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)? Andy Mabbett | Talk to Andy Mabbett 10:04, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox Template code problem

Hi. The Template:Infobox Stadium seems to contain parameters that are not in the template code. For example in the infobox on the page, Millennium Dome some of the information inserted in the code on the edit page does not appear on the article. I have inserted the code from the page below for your reference. Not all of the information filled in is displayed on the article page. For example the information inserted for services engineer on the edit page does not appear on the article.

{{Infobox Stadium
| stadium_name = The O2 arena
| nickname =
| image = [[Image:O2_arena.jpg|270px]]
| fullname =
| location = The O2, North Greenwich, London, England
| coordinates = 51°30′10.14″N, 0°0′11.22″E
| broke_ground =
| built = Between 2003 and 2007
| opened = Sunday, 24 June 2007
| renovated =
| expanded =
| closed =
| demolished =
| owner = English Partnerships (Ultimate Landlord)
| operator = Anschutz Entertainment Group UK
| surface = Versatile
| construction_cost = £600 million to develop all of The O2
| architect = HOK Sport
| structural engineer = Buro Happold
| services engineer = M-E Engineers
| general_contractor= Sir Robert McAlpine
| project_manager =
| main_contractors =
| former_names = Millennium Dome
| tenants = No Regular Tenants
| seating_capacity = Upto 23, 000
| dimensions =
}}

I am unsure on how to fix this and would be grateful is someone could help. Thanks in advance.Tbo 157 12:42, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I may have found the cause. Around midnight after 8 March Tkn20 added parameters to Template:Infobox Skyscraper, and a few minutes later documented the parameters in Template:Infobox Stadium/doc (see contribs). It looks like Tkn20 got the two infoboxes mixed up. PrimeHunter 13:37, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm not a template coder and will not make edits. I'm just pointing out a possible problem. PrimeHunter 13:45, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I have managed to successfully resolve the problem myself. Thanks.Tbo 157 18:24, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] PowerPoint Link Template

It would be nice to have a template for linking to PowerPoint presentations. Just like the others here: Category:External_link_file_type_templates. Maybe put it here: Template:PPTlink. You could have an image like this one or one of the two here for PowerPoint. In addition, it would be nice for .ppt files to be recognized site wide and be labeled automatically as a PowerPoint file with a PowerPoint icon. PowerPoint files should be identified so people will know that it is not an ordinary web page. It would also be nice to have a bot, like PDFbot, to update the file sizes of PPT files throughout the site. Wdwic Pictures 17:16, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I have created the template for PPT type {{PPTlink}}. If you think it is necessary to have a bot to update pages, you can request. eDenE 03:35, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Is there any way to not include the link icon, like how Template:PDFlink works? I noticed the others have both the link icon and the icon representing the file format. Is the PDF template special or can the others be programmed like it? Wdwic Pictures 02:58, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I looked into Template:PDFlink and I couldn't find options to hide the link. If you are referring to examples under Limitations section, they are wrong usage of the template. eDenE 03:47, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sometimes Anonymous Users=Okay

Would it be possible to have a box that says "This user believes that anonymous editing is okay, as long as they don't vandalize." With "anonymous editing" linked to Category:Wikipedians for anonymous editing. And "vandalize" linked to Wikipedia:Vandalism. If this is possible, that would be great, because I feel this way, and I think others in the present, or future might feel the same way. JpGrB 06:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I've added it to the current userbox - Template:User pro-anon. You can use the new one by adding {{User pro-anon|2}} to your user page. eDenE 13:15, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] new GANotice

While there are {{GANotice}} templates for passing, failing, and holding GA candidates, there is no general notice to politely inform an editor that you are simply taking-up the review of the article they nominated. I prefer to introduce myself before I actually do the review, so a general notice like the current templates would be nice. Thanks VanTucky (talk) 21:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Do you want something like? eDenE 19:12, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I am glad to be reviewing the article Article you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to X days. Feel free to to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period.

That looks pretty good, but I think I'll alter the text a bit. Thanks! VanTucky (talk) 21:30, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

That's pretty much what I was thinking of. VanTucky (talk) 21:32, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I have updated {{GANotice}}. Neglecting result= part will output your text. You can also specify days, which defaults to 7. eDenE 13:03, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
