Wikipedia:Request an account/Proposed version
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because of users automatically creating accounts for vandalism, Wikipedia has been forced to prevent usernames being created that are too similar to existing usernames and to add an image (called a captcha) to the login process to confirm that users are not using an automated process. If you have attempted to create an account, but have chosen a username that is too similar to an existing username, or have been unable to read the image because you are using a screen reader, or a browser that does not support images, please follow the instructions below:
Instructions:
- Check here to make sure your desired name isn't already in use.
- Send an e-mail to accounts-enwiki-l@lists.wikimedia.org with the username you wish to register. You may wish to use a disposable e-mail address because it will be visible to all subscribers to the mailing list.
- Do not e-mail the password that you'd like to use on the account - you will receive a randomized password via e-mail, which you you will be prompted to change when you first login.
- Check your e-mail inbox for any possible updates or problems that may occur with your request.
- If you are told that the username is "already taken", you will need to try a different username.
- Once your account has been made successfully, you will receive an automated e-mail from wiki@wikimedia.org stating your login credentials. You can use these to log in where you will then be prompted to create a new password.
Administrators and experienced users: Instructions on how subscribe to the list and act on requests can be found here.
