Republican Action (Spain)

The Acción Republicana (Republican Action) was the name of a Spanish left-wing republican party.

The AR was founded in 1926 under the name Acción Política ("Political Action") by Manuel Azaña and José Giral. In 1930 the name Acción Republicana was adopted as the partyname.

At the 1931 republican elections, the AR won 27 seats in the Cortes. Azaña was asked to form a government and became Prime Minister. In 1933 the Azaña government resigned and at the November 1933 elections, the center-right Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right (CEDA) won the elections and the AR suffered an electoral defeat.

In 1934 the AR merged with several small left-wing republican parties and the Radical Republican Socialist Party of Marcelino Domingo. The new party was named the Republican Left (Izquierda Republicana).

The AR was a typical leftwing liberal party. It attracted people of the small bourgeoisie, like teachers, lawyers and shop owners. Besides its left wing program, the AR was also very Anticlerical.
