Republic of Georgia (1861)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Republic of Georgia was the informal term occasionally used for the The US state of Georgia when it seceded from the United States of America on January 19, 1861. The ordnance said, "We do further Declare and Ordain, that the Union now subsisting between the State of Georgia and other States, under the name of the United States of America, Is Hereby Dissolved, and that the State of Georgia is in full possession and exercise of all those rights of Sovereignty which belong and appertain to a Free and Independent State." Some local printers added "Republic of Georgia", on their copies of the secession ordinance. (The dating is unclear--the prints may have been made after 1865.) Independence lasted only a few days as Georgia on February 4 joined the Confederate States of America. Apart from the prints, there is no record of the term being used by anyone.
