Republic of Choson

The Republic of Chosŏn (ROC; Korean: Chosŏn Konghwaguk; Hangul: 조선공화국; Hanja: 朝鮮共和國), is a proposed replacement to the current Democratic People's Republic of Korea in eastern Asia. The ROC would occupy the same area as the DPRK, covering the northern half of the peninsula of Korea. To the south it would border South Korea with which it would conceivably begin discussions of reunification. Its northern border would be predominantly with China, and a small section with Russia. Presumably, it would be again commonly known locally as Pukchosŏn ("North Chosŏn"; 북조선; 北朝鮮) and Bukhan ("North Han"; 북한; 北韓) would be commonly used in South Korea.

In 2004, North Korean defector Kim Ho-Seung proposed the establishment of the Republic of Choson as a possible successor to a deposed DPRK government. The purpose of this transitional republic is to slowly "normalize" North Korea in preparation of unification with South Korea.
