Renishaw plc is an engineering company based in Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire, England. Renishaw is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.
Renishaw was founded in 1973 by David McMurtry, now Sir David, who retains a large minority stake in the business and is regular member of the Sunday Times Rich List. As an employee of Rolls Royce he had needed to improve a prototype engine and thus invented a touch-trigger probe device, which he then patented.
Renishaw specialises in industrial metrology and spectroscopy and sells its products in the major markets around the world. Turnover for the year ended 30 June 2007 was £181 million. Profits were £32.7 million before tax (excluding an exceptional item) and £26.1 million after tax.
Renishaw's offices are situated in an old mill from the industrial revolution, with several new buildings. It is a nature oriented site, with dozens of birds (including ducks and peacocks) and a large lake. The site is also close to the village of Charfield on the Bristol-Birmingham railway line, where the railway station has been considered for reopening.
