Renfrewshire Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Renfrewshire Cup is an annual pre-season competition between teams in the Renfrewshire area, however the final is almost always between the two largest teams, St Mirren and Morton. The cup is currently with St Mirren, after defeating Morton 1-0.
The number of times each team has won the event:
Morton - 51; St Mirren - 49; Abercorn - 5; Port Glasgow Athletic - 5; Arthurlie - 2; Thornliebank - 1; Babcock & Wilcox - 1.
This is the second oldest trophy in Scotland still competed for. Only the Scottish Cup is older and still contested.
Each tournament is contested by four teams : Morton, St Mirren and the finalists of an amateur tournament, the Victoria Cup.
The Victoria Cup finalists meet Morton or St Mirren in the semi finals of the Renfrewshire Cup.
You have to go backto 1991 for the last time an amateur team won a semi.
On this occasion Greenock based Bellaire defeated St Mirren 1-0 at Love St in one of the biggest shocks of the tournament's history.
