Rencontre East is a small, isolated fishing community located north east of Belleoram, and west of Grand La Pierre on Fortune Bay. The population was 165 in 2006. This small community is not connected to any surrounding areas by road but is accessible by scheduled ferry service. There are no paved roads and no cars. The main industry is cod and lobster fishing. Rencontre East is the location of one of only a few Molybdenum mines in Canada's history. The mine was located at Ackley City at Rencontre Lake just minutes north of the town. The mine was closed without one load of the mineral ever leaving Newfoundland because Canada would not allow shipments to America in war times before they entered the war (Newfoundland encyclopedia). The town has two grocery stores, a fire hall, an all grade school and a community hall. There are two churches, one Anglican (St. Stephens) and one Catholic (St. Josephs). Most recently the town has seen a big decline in population due to work shortage and many residents leaving for bigger centres all across Canada.
