René Menard (2 March 1605 - August 1661) was a French Jesuit missionary explorer who traveled to Huronia in 1641, learned the language of the Wyandot, and was soon in charge of many of the satellite missions around Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. He survived the continuous attacks from Iroquois (see Iroquois Wars) on Huronia and after hearing that the Wyandot were in western Lake Superior after the Huron-Iroquois wars from Radisson and Groseilliers he ventured out to find them in 1661, wintered in L'Anse, Michigan, and disappeared traveling inland from Chequamegon Bay.
