[edit] Competition question

What happened about the "$100" competition?? Its been a month ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 22:33, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

The core contest. Which took place late November early December. I wrote a whole article Deforestation in Brazil for that contest hoping it could compete with the others but nothing ever came of it. There were supposed to be five winners decided some time after Dec. 9. I remember you telling User:Danny you'd chip in £100 ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 22:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

I did several weeks ago but he didn't reply. I thought the competition was a great idea personally but I'd imagine it concerned the pretentious wikiites who want to avoid any "commericalization" of wikipedia!! I don't know the full story but I saw an argument on Jimbo Wales' talk page and they were having a go at him for approving it. Maybe I got it wrong but I;d expected a competition to be judged between Danny, Angela and somebody else and thought I stood a chance wit the others. Its only 100 bucks but still I thought it was a nice idea and disappointed they didn't keep their word ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 22:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC).

[edit] 209 IP

Are there multiple people posting from there, you think? Lawrence Cohen 18:39, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

No idea, but if an anon wants to get really involved in a page I think it is best to make sure that they are not confused with others from the same IP address or it will make things confusing. Remember (talk) 21:09, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RFAR

I think it's fine to add yourself, when you leave a statement. Lawrence Cohen 17:56, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ArbCom

I have regularly added myself to list of parties in ArbCom cases, and have actually done so in one of the current requests. You probably could as well. There is the chance that if any of your personal conduct is found to be dubious, that doing so might potentially place you in a situation to be sanctioned in some way, so you probably would want to consider that. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any real problems, provided you want to be a part of the ongoing discussion. Hope that helps a little. John Carter (talk) 17:56, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Waterboarding

It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Note: the image has been removed from flickr and the uploader's account is gone. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:12, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Missing image Image:Lastjudgement.jpg

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Lastjudgement.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Lastjudgement.jpg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Lastjudgement.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 05:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Template:HHS divisions

A tag has been placed on Template:HHS divisions requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:UNC Ramses.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:UNC Ramses.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Lastjudgement.jpg

Cool, thanks so much for the barnstar!  :). No worries about it not making featured image - I see that it failed to reach consensus. I see what they mean about the noise in the dark areas, but oh well, at least more people can enjoy the detail of the image, whether it's featured or not :). [edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Waterboarding

This Arbitration case has closed, and the final decision may be reviewed through the above link. Further to the relevant findings of fact, Waterboarding and all closely-related pages are subject to article probation (full remedy); editors working on Waterboarding, or closely related pages, may be subject to an editing restriction at the discretion of any uninvolved administrator, whereby any edits by that editor which are judged by an administrator to be uncivil, personal attacks, or assumptions of bad faith, may result in a block. (full remedy).

Should any user subject to an editing restriction in this case violate that restriction, that user may be briefly blocked, up to a week in the event of repeated violations. After 5 blocks, the maximum block length shall increase to one year (full enforcement). Before such restrictions are enacted on an editor, he or she must be issued with a warning containing a link to the decision.

[edit] Waterboarding RfM

A Request for Mediation has been filed on the Waterboarding article concerning the content dispute in the first six words of the article. You have been named as a party and your participation would be appreciated. I believe this is the best approach to an amicable resolution of the dispute. Please indicate your agreement here. A request for mediation has been filed with the Mediation Committee that lists you as a party. The Mediation Committee requires that all parties listed in a mediation must be notified of the mediation. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Waterboarding 2, and indicate whether you agree or disagree to mediation. If you are unfamiliar with mediation on Wikipedia, please refer to Wikipedia:Mediation. [edit] Egonomics (book)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Egonomics (book), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Egonomics (book). [edit] Template spacing

Hello! I noticed you adding Template:Compact periodic table to several pages, and adding line breaks when it interfered with other templates. I just wanted to let you know that Template:Clear and Template:- both do the same thing, making the page wait until the other templates are done before showing anything after, without having to guess how many line breaks to use. I added this to the articles you changed. – Psyche825 (talk) 21:44, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Joining project

Thanks for the note. As I say I am often working on name disambiguation and that leads into surnames so it makes sense to have a foot in each Project as working closely together should help get the best of both worlds - it arose from this discussion in which I outline some ways for this to work, and ways the disambiguation project can help by spotting situations where the surnames get too big and split them off. It could all work well.

I also have the Dictionary of Surnames so will dust that off and see if I can't add anything (references are often thin on pages I've ha dealings with and that should help boost it a bit). (Emperor (talk) 16:35, 10 March 2008 (UTC))

[edit] New policy proposal that may be of interest

I'm tapping this message out to you because you were involved at the AfDs of Eve Carson or Lauren Burk. Following both of these heated debates, a new proposal has been made for a guideline to aid these contentious debates, which can be found at WP:N/CA. There is a page for comments at Wikipedia talk:Notability (criminal acts)/Opinions should you wish to make a comment. Thanks for your time, and apologies if this was not of interest! [edit] Templates

Hey, thanks. Yes, I like templates and I like (space) science so I guess I'd be looking at that intersection sooner or later. Wow, you don't have many templates on your contribution page, do you?...! I'm only really into two things at present: using {{nowrap begin}} item{{·w}} item{{·w}} ... {{nowrap end}} to sort out linewrapping in templates and trying out {{Infobox}} on infobox templates not already using it. Like {{Navbox}}, it sure saves space and looks much more approachable. But I guess you already know all that. Anyway, thanks for pointing me toward your work -- I look forward to learning something from it. The Perodic Table ones look fantastic. Sardanaphalus (talk) 18:40, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Notable" Carolina basketball players

Hi, I actually started a discussion at Talk:North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball#Notable players and coaches, but I figured I'd be WP:BOLD, since no one raised any objections and it'd been over a week since I made the suggestion. I didn't plan on my edit being the final version, but I thought I'd start by removing redundant listings and the riff raffs, and then we could add other lists (i.e. NBA all-stars, coaches and execs) later. But I'm always open to ideas, so please join the discussion. --Mosmof (talk) 16:42, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

No worries, I don't always check the talk page either. Hopefully we can reach some consensus, though I figure there won't ever be a perfect solution. --Mosmof (talk) 16:36, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:UNC Ramses.jpg)

⚠
Thanks for uploading Image:UNC Ramses.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.

I found a freely licensed image of Rameses, so I guess this one probably doesn't meet a claim of fair use now. Yellowspacehopper (talk) 16:28, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication

I have nominated University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Artichoke2020 (talk) 20:02, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of paintings by Hans Gude - FA status

Do you know if the current list is an exhaustive list of the paintings by Hans Gude. If so, I was thinking that this article maybe could qualify for Featured List status. What are your thoughts? Remember (talk) 21:31, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm certain it is not comprehensive. It currently consists off all the paintings listed by Haverkamp (Haverkamp, Frode; Gude, Hans Fredrik [January 1992]. Hans Gude (in Norwegian). Oslo: Aschehoug. ISBN 8203170722. OCLC 29047091.), but I believe his book is incomplete because I have come across other images online that he does not cover. I don't know of a source though from which to expand it. --Falcorian (talk) 21:51, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Damn. thanks anyway. Remember (talk) 21:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. It's an interest of mine so I'll expand the list as I find sources. However, I'm not sure if it will ever be complete (or how often it will be updated). --Falcorian (talk) 00:39, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Economics question

Hi, I'm looking for an editor with knowledge of economics to address a question that I'm not sure of (you're the sole active editor on the Economics wikiproject that I've found so far). An editor added part of the following, including a referral to his own work and I would rather someone with the appropriate knowledge give the OK than an ignorant one such as I. Could you give me an opinion on the following?

The imperfection of the labour market is sometimes graphically presented with a UV-curve, a hyperbolic or similarly shaped curve that shows a fixed relationship between the unemployment rate on one axis and the vacancy rate on the other. If the economy changes, the labour market will move along this curve. Factors that affect friction will shift the curve inwards or outwards. It is possible to derive this curve mathematically by aggregating (infinitely small) submarkets of the labour market, if it is assumed that these submarkets follow a probability distribution. Formulae have been derived for the normal distribution[1][2] and the Weibull distribution;[3] the latter has the hyperbolic UV-curve (U x V = c) as a special case.

Specifically, do you see any problems with bold sections, the citation or the text it accompanies?

My apologies for the vagueness, I'm trying to get an opinion based purely on the sources. Also, do you know if this publication serve as a reference in addition to, or as a replacement? Thanks, WLU (talk) 16:17, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Wow, you give me way too much credit. I have no idea if this is accurate. Why don't you try asking User:Lawlorg. I believe he is a graduate student in economics. I am just a fan of the field. Remember (talk) 16:22, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Your advice to seek out a specific user is only slightly less useful than a response itself - I never know who to ask! Thanks very much and please don't trouble yourself with this further if you're not sure. I'll spam this over to Lawlorg instead :) Hope you don't mind, I will mention to LL that you referred me.
