[edit] Removable vs. removeable

Hopefully I'm not stepping into one of those UK/US things, since an online dictionary says both are correct, but "removeable" gets 1.6 million hits on Google, while "removable" gets 22.4 million hits. Based on that, it seems that this should be moved back to Removable media, but I wanted to get some input from others before doing so. --Interiot 22:36, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removable vs. removeable

There is no question about the spelling, of course it is the version without the second "e", as defined in the "Oxford English Dictionary", the dictionary that sets the standard for all the rest to adhere to. It is the bastardisation of the English language by the U.S.A. that serves to confuse. (User: Meldrew)

[edit] Removable vs. removeable

Meldrew,

Of course it's removable without the "e". I'd bet you're English. Why do you assume Americans spell it any differently? Besides, if either of the dialects is a bastardization, then it's BE. American English has changed less since the two dialects split in the 17th century. Granted, Webster had his own hand in some changes as well - so both dialects are a bit of a bastardization at the end of the day...

I did my own little Google experiment:

On google.co.uk - UK sites only, removeable had 228,000 hits, while removable had 2,180,000.

On google.com removeable had 1,420,000 hits, while removable had 36,200,000.

So, it would appear that a larger percentage of Brits think the word is spelled with an extra e, than the rest of the English speaking world, which actually makes sense when you look at the differences in the following spellings: aging (AE) vs. ageing (BE), argument(AE) vs. arguement(BE), and judgment(AE) vs. judgement(BE).

Maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly. American usage is not a lesser form by nature (i.e. "wrong" spellings, etc.), it's more a matter of the limited active vocabulary of the average citizen that gives AE usage its bad name.
