Talk:Remote Direct Memory Access

Anyone know if Firewire is a reasonable alternative to ethernet for RDMA with commodity hardware? Firewire does actual DMA transfers, so it might have lower latency by bypassing the TCP stack. Phr 07:17, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Your average $20 pci firewire card can serve external read and write requests directly from main memory. The data will never touch the main CPU. I would be shocked if commodity gigabit ethernet could match 800 Mbit firewire. (cred: I have written firmware for a firewire device.) --Ryanrs 03:44, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
