Thanks very much for your help with Grey's Anatomy. I see you haven't been here very long. Welcome aboard. [edit] Earth pic
Hello, I wonder what you mean by your edit [1] when you say its "not our job to fit a photograph to our expectations"...? My upload of the bigger image was not intended to fit anything to our expectations but instead to more accurately represent the true color of earth [2] than does the excessively red version currently in the article.--Deglr6328 02:38, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bari sax
Great edits on the baritone saxophone article! Those were all areas that I felt were awkward, so thanks for your good eye. Badagnani 02:45, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
Good idea. I didn't know there was no Jazz Messengers article. Unfortunately I don't know much about them (I'm more into avant-garde jazz). There is also a great group called the Jazz Passengers. Badagnani 12:56, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
By the way, your name seems Finnish--is that right? Badagnani 04:37, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
I've always been interested in Finland and Finnish music and even sing a Finnish tango called "Satumaa" (I play accordion in a street music trio). Anyway, there is a Finnish composer called Mikko Heinio and somehow the arrangement of letters seemed similar to your screen name. Badagnani 04:45, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Edinburgh Zoo
Hey reisio, many thanks for the input on this page, many improvements there. Any idea what I should do about the images I've uploaded given that the actual images names don't reflect the correct names? Is it a case of delete and upload or just update the description pages? In future I think I'll keep the image names a wee bit more generic... Cheers. SeanMack 08:00, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
- The only image with a filename that's actually wrong (afaik) is the one for the Rockhopper penguins (which is currently labelled Emperor); the rest are just not as specific as they could be. It's no biggie, though, I've a perfect out...
- Since you're licensing all these images with GFDL, just reupload them all to WikiMedia Commons (where they should be), and this time take care with their filenames. Replace the image links in the Edinburgh Zoo article with the new Commons images. Then toss the not-so-greatly-named ones here on en.wikipedia.org into a post @ Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion, saying that they're no longer being used and have been replaced/obsoleted by Commons images with better filenames - mention that you are the original uploader, too. ¦ Reisio 08:42, 2005 July 23 (UTC)
- After you upload to Commons, we can add your great images to the separate articles for each animal, too. :) ¦ Reisio 08:47, 2005 July 23 (UTC)
Compliments will get you everywhere! I was planning to do that when I had the names sorted out. Dunno if you saw the request on the helpdesk or just came across the page? I have held off from uploading to commons as I have uploaded a fair amount of pictures to the wiki and if I start, I feel I would need to do them all. Unfortunatly i had uploaded a fair bit by the time I became aware of commons. Are you aware of any tools - admin or otherwise that would make it a bit faster? That way I wouldn't mind so much doing them all..... Cheers SeanMack 09:17, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
- I saw it at WP:RD, yes. As for the fair bit of noncommons - there's no rush, take your time. You also don't _have_ to, it'd just be nice. Other people might even do it for you, eventually (if the licensing info is available/acceptable). I don't personally know of any tools - you might ask at WP:VP or #wikipedia on irc.freenode.net ¦ Reisio 10:05, 2005 July 23 (UTC)
Me again... "What is it now?" you say. Well I uploaded the rest of the decent shots I took that day and put them in the gallery - it may be overkill but the pics are there for other uses now if wanted by anyone. The problem is I can't identify the penguins again...East African grey crowned crane & Pygmy Hippo are correct, but the otyher two I'm unsure of. The official site doesn't actually note all the types of penguins they keep. Any ideas?
- Best guess is that the one swimming is a Gentoo Penguin (not a lot to see in that photo, but the bright white on head makes it likely), and the other is a juvenile Yellow-eyed Penguin. ¦ Reisio 13:14, 2005 July 23 (UTC)
Once again many thanks for the help. As you indicated the underwater one is a bit of an ask though. I've sent an email to the PR rep at the zoo telling them that I can change any errors hopefully that should do it. All the best reisio, nice working with you. Regards SeanMack 14:35, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
- Btw there's a two-year-old inventory list on their site [3], which supports the notion that they'd (still) have Gentoos. Yellow-eyed is still just my best guess for the other, but I think it's a pretty safe bet - compare Image:Penguin_Edinburgh_Zoo_2004_SMC.jpg with this image I found online. I also read that juveniles do have lighter heads like that (and a quick Google image search corroborates). Maybe some expert will stop by sometime and verify it. ¦ Reisio 21:27, 2005 July 23 (UTC)

Salve, Reisio!
I don't believe I ever thanked you for responding to my question about Grey's Anatomy's music. I had asked on WP:RD if it possibly was the Swingle Singers and you suggested it was Jem. Having only today been able to listen to a music sample--I wasn't able to open the links you provided but went through Amazon.com's samples--you were correct. [edit] Sax family photo
Thanks for the reformatting. I'll check your code and see how you did it. Should the photo credit also appear in the caption on the main page or is it proper to only list it in the page you get when you click on the photo? Badagnani 20:48, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
Now I notice the photo in the saxophone article is back to the original uncropped photo from Jay Easton's site, with poor contrast. I did spend some time adjusting it so that it would work better in the article. Is the reason you changed it back because you objected to the cropping and contrast adjustment? Badagnani 21:03, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
I'm sure Jay will be amenable to saying whatever bureaucratic bs is necessary to get the photo up on the site. I'll email to ask him this, as you recommend. I used Auto Contrast (then about added about +10% in brightness and contrast above that) on PhotoShop because the shot seems to have been taken around dusk (notice that the walkway lights and streetlamps are lit). With the adjustment it looks more like daytime. I had cropped it so that the saxes would appear comparatively larger but the original photo's composition was quite nice with the buildings in the background. Could be fine to leave it uncropped if you'd prefer it that way. You can adjust as you see fit. Badagnani 21:19, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
Please let me know what exactly to ask Jay Easton and how he should respond so that we can post his response as proof of his proper licensing. Badagnani 21:20, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
OK, just asked him all. I assume that his emailed response stating which license he prefers will be sufficient? Badagnani 21:51, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
Just got the licensing permission from Jay Easton. Can you take it from here and add the proper license (with his stipulations)? Badagnani 23:55, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, he spells them out in his email, which I added to the page for the photo itself (not sure if that's the best place for it; maybe I should remove the email addresses too, but I thought it would help so people are assured that his email is authentic. I think he wants the photographer credited and his website mentioned if someone wants to use the photo in the future. Badagnani 00:23, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

- No, I can't see any justification for removing actual valid ecyclopedic content. That would be even worse. I don't see any content that actually novel enought to only be cited by that Omninerd website. As well, most things on Wikipedia are not totally cited, it's not a great solution, but in the short term, I'd rather have uncited information that have either less information, or spam. - The references don't belong because they are to a non-notable, unreliabe, personal web page, and the references are added by the owner himself. Having those spam links there detract from our encyclopedia. Dmcdevit·t 00:36, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
- Just try to see this hypothetical. What if someone adds information that appears to be helpful, and then cites their personal website? (What if it were like a Geocities one or something like that?) Obviously we wouldn't remove any helpful info, but we shouldn't keep an unreliable citation either. The two are not mutually exclusive. Dmcdevit·t 02:22, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

- As I've said elsewhere, you can't have your cake and eat it, too. If the sites want to keep the content from the OmniNerd articles, then they will need to be cited. Uriah923 03:27, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Origin of Lunar Linux
I must disagree with lunar not having an origin because it is based on another distribution. Many other distributions are based on other distributions, such as Ubuntu, Knoppix, and CentOS. The project started in the US, thus to me, that's where Lunar's origin is, and I'm sure this is how many other distribution's origins are figured. If the origin column were so specific to only be for distributions not based on others, it would become quite useless just because so many distributions are forks of other distributions. That of course, is just my opinion, and being a lunar developer myself I'm sure I'm a bit biased, but if it is to be enforced on lunar, it should be enforced on all forks. -- Striker 22:28, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- I don't see how debating where all the project's developers were from counts for anything. That can be stated for any distribution as well...I would imagine hardly any distributions have one single location for its developers, not to mention that other distributions based on a previous one will be from the same location. Ubuntu is a fine example of this, since it's based on debian which has developers world-wide. Lunar was forked by Chuck Mead under his new project based in the US, on US servers, thus the origin is the US. -- Striker 23:32, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
- Why are you enforcing this only on the Lunar Linux project, and not all the other distributions listed? Can I not also ask where exactly every developer for a particular distribution was from and find out that some developers lived abroad in other countries? I fail to see the point in your argument that all developers from one line of distributions must all live in one location for it to count as an origin. Everything has an origin, even if it's based on prior work and not all developers lived in the same location. -- Striker 00:33, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

All I had was a peculiar edit summary, which you simply repeated, without acknowledging my message. As to your claim, I suspect that you simply haven't noticed the "hr"s — there are many of them used in this way. I prefer not to give examples, as I don't want to see you remove them. They serve to separate the (irrelevant) dablink section from the article. You seem to be removing it as a matter of personal taste. Consistency is not a good enough reason; aside from anything else, when two things are inconsistent, a decision has to be made as to which should be made consistent with which; your apparently arbitrary decision isn't good enough. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:13, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] How to spell UNIX?
http://web.greens.org/about/unix.html
Just, you read "The Bell Labs documentation was very careful to always spell UNIX in all capital letters, and small caps whereever possible.", so UNIX is UNIX, Unix and unix are just incorrect forms just too used.
Please revert all of your edits.
—Claunia 18:31, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- The Unix expertise of an organization on Green parties that apparently pays so much attention to detail that their HTML could've been assembled by a five-year-old, and the fact that they refer to "MULTICS" (which was of course "Multics" [they even link 'MULTICS' to a site that uses only 'Multics']), et al. aside, please read Talk:Unix#UNICS vs UNIX.
- I will not be reverting my edits and anyone categorically reverting them will naturally get an RfC, as that would obviously be a colossal waste of many peoples' time (on top of being wrong). ¦ Reisio 19:56, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- So you know how to spell UNIX better than the creators and the copyright holders? —Claunia 21:37, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- If you've read Talk:Unix#UNICS vs UNIX, you know that Dennis Ritchie, a co-creator of Unix, has acknowledged that it was originally "Unix". Others associated also use "Unix" and while I haven't personally seen a good quote of Thompson saying "It's 'Unix'", logic suggests his view is in accordance with theirs. Clearly, though, when you referred to "the creators", you meant Bell Labs and AT&T, who did mostly use "UNIX" (at least after 1974). Nowadays, due to idiotic legalities, "UNIX" is only what The Open Group says it is and nothing more, but "Unix" was, is and always shall be the OS in general. All that aside, I almost certainly know more about how to spell it than the copyright holders - they care about their bottom lines, and I am a pedant. ¦ Reisio 22:42, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- Please note that, for example, Apple and FreeBSD both use "UNIX". [4] [5] AlistairMcMillan 22:00, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- ...and NetBSD's front page says "Unix". Good thing Wikipedia isn't run by Apple or FreeBSD, eh? :) Mac OS X is also of course based on FreeBSD, so saying 'Apple _and_ FreeBSD' doesn't mean much. The original BSD seems likely to have been for a Unix whose official name used "UNIX" (not "Unix"), so it's probably only natural that they would use "UNIX". ¦ Reisio 23:16, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Naming conventions
Standard naming conventions (including Wikipedia's) are to leave article and prepositions uncapitalised, even if the book or record publishers present them otherwise. After all, the CD of "Time Out" also capitalises "to" (though the LP cover didn't). It's true that most internet sources follow the CD cover, though some (e.g., [6] & [7]) don't. I've seen both versions in printed sources, depending on the style manual used by the publishers involved.
I don't have any other recording of "Pick up Sticks"*; do you know if anyone else has covered it? (I'm afraid that I have to admit that I catalogue my jazz recordings in terms of leaders, musicians, sides, etc., so that I have a listing of different versions. The most is "Body and Soul", predictably enough (21) with "A Night in Tunisia" a close second (19). And I don't own an anorak...) --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:14, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not following you. It's a song name; "Pick Up Sticks", period. I see nothing in the manual of style that suggests the "U" should be lowercase. Could you link to what you're talking about? ¦ Reisio 22:59, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- I'm not sure where it is in the MoS (I'll look), but the convention is pretty standard (Chicago, Hart's Rules, etc.) that in titles, articles and prepositions aren't capitalised (some manuals specify prepositions under four letters). This isn't a matter of its original usage, or preference of the original publisher, but of the style of the publication in which it's cited. thus some publishers ignore any such convention, and capitalise everything (they'd print "Three To Get Ready" and "Pick Up Sticks") while others follow the convention, and capitalise neither "to" not "up". Wikipedia, as has been discussed in many places (and if I can remember or find where, I'll link to them) follows the latter. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:06, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Manual of Style (titles) is the obvious place, but it doesn't mention the convention (though all its examples follow it). I've requested help on its Talk page. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:12, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- Chicago MoS changed their rule: if a preposition is used adverbially, then it is capitalized. "Pick Up Sticks" should be that way, as should "Pump Up the Volume". But, for example, "Stand on the Shore" would not be capitalized. An explanation from the Chicago MoS Q&A: "An opposite problem was encountered with our own publication of the novel A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean (yes, the lowercase “l” is how he spelled his name). According to our rules at the time, “through,” a preposition, would not get a capital “t” in titles. Somebody here wisely objected to this, so we capitalized it. We've since added an exception for prepositions that are stressed or used adjectivally or adverbially." -- ChrisB 20:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

- Kudos. :) I have updated the information. ¦ Reisio 17:43, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] OrphanBot commenting
The commenting is unnecessary and adds newlines to articles. The edit summary should suffice. ¦ Reisio 23:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- Could you give an example of the bot adding an unneccessary newline to an article? --Carnildo 22:02, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cut Stinkhorn 'egg'
Your revert of my edit was wrong. The photo shows one stinkhorn 'egg' which has been cut in half. Strobilomyces 14:26, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Web page vs. web page
I don't get it, in How to spell UNIX? you say you are a pedant. So then why would you revert my correction of "web page" to "Web page", since "Web" is referring to the World Wide Web, not a generic web? [10] Well you got the Unix thing right. --DylanW 08:40, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Since the beginning, "web" has existed with a generic, non-proper lower case "w" - indeed overshadowing any capitalized "Web"s - http://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/News/. It'd probably be nice to use "Web page" the first time it's mentioned, but using it throughout is goofy-looking at present and would have been in the past, too. ¦ Reisio 11:50, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Swiss motto
Is there any reason you continue to implement your preferred "none" version against the opinion of at least two other editors (Schutz and myself)? Lupo 13:30, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Didn't see your self-revert. :-/ Lupo 13:31, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
And missed that it was only partial, so my question stands... Lupo 13:32, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- If I had to guess, Schutz added the footnote at least partially because of me [11] - I just took it another step. As for the question in general, it is not "the motto of Switzerland" - instead of saying "this is the motto of Switzerland (footnote: ...except it's not, here's why)", it makes more since to just say "there is no motto, though some people have associated {phrase} as such". ¦ Reisio 13:43, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- This is going too far, I think. Given the amount of documentation that has been found and linked to, simply writing "Motto: None", even with a footnote, is misleading. And there is a huge gap between saying "It is not official, but traditional" and "... is sometimes associated ...". Schutz 13:55, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
- Well I don't have a map showing the area it's recognized and isn't. Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno#Motto of Switzerland claims it's mostly a French thing, and that doesn't exactly constitute a majority. My edit, I think, makes it both not incorrect and likely to not be altered every week by random users. Consider this: would you rather have someone associate you with something you may not be associated with (and are not legally associated with), then claim maybe you aren't, or have someone not associate you with something you may not be associated with, then claim maybe you are. ¦ Reisio 14:42, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
