Reimi Jahana (レイミ・謝花 Reimi Jahana?) (Her family name is also romanized as Jyahana) is a fictional character from the Variable Geo series, and is often portrayed as the primary rival of the protagonist, Yuka Takeuchi.

Contents

[edit] Background

Reimi is the head of the Jahana Group, the organization which supervises the V.G. tournaments. As one would expect from a person of such high position, Reimi is wealthy, highly intelligent, and extremely beautiful. She is also a skilled martial artist and a three-time V.G. champion. Reimi initially sees the competitions as a chance to prove herself the strongest and most beautiful warrior of all and takes a kind of perverse pleasure in watching those who lose against her be humiliated in various ways. However, after losing for the first time against Yuka, she has become increasingly less antagonistic towards the other competitors.

[edit] Fictional Character History

[edit] Before V.G.

Reimi was born to Ryuichirou Jahana, a wealthy Japanese industrialist, and his wife Miranda, a powerful American martial artist. Reimi grew up being trained to fight by her mother, and anything less than perfection was punished with harsh torture. Due to this, Reimi grew up to be cold, distant, and obsessed with being the best. After entering the V.G. tournament for the first time, she flawlessly won her way to the top, proceeding to defend her position twice, including a defense against Kaori Yanase, which caused the latter to subsequently enter every further tournament in hopes of besting Reimi.

[edit] V.G.: Variable Geo / Advanced V.G.

Reimi attempts to make her third defense, although she has grown bored of fighting opponents who are no match for her and laments that Kaori may be her only true competition. However, Yuka enters and begins an uparalleled winning streak, causing Reimi to become interested in her abilities.

When Yuka manages to best Kaori in the tournament semifinals, Reimi becomes so excited at the chance to humiliate someone so strong, that she attempts to hurry the finals along by visiting Hanna Miller's, the restaurant at which Yuka is positioned and challenging Yuka then and there. However, Yuka refuses to fight while she is on shift, causing an impatient Reimi to destroy part of the restaurant. Yuka, upset that Reimi would endanger innocent bystanders simply to get a fight out of her, battles Reimi. Although she dominates the bout early on, Yuka's persistence wins through in the end, and Reimi is defeated.

It is later learned that Reimi had also been used by her mother as part of the Hybrid development project, which granted her extreme spiritual powers. After her defeat by Yuka, the latter is attacked by K-1 and K-2, Hybrids who had been ordered to attack and capture anyone who was strong enough to defeat Reimi. After Yuka defeats them and they are subsequently killed by Miranda herself, Reimi realizes that she was only being used as a measuring stick so that her mother could find stronger fighters to experiment on. She also gives Yuka moral support, realizing that seeing the K-series being murdered has greatly upset her. In return, Yuka gives Reimi her hair ribbon as a symbol of friendship.

[edit] Advanced V.G. 2

During the year that passed since the previous tournament, Reimi has become a much kinder person. She treats the members of Jahana with respect and has become a shining example of a leader. She is also married during this time.

Reimi holds a new V.G. tournament. Both to regain her championship, and to draw out her mother and prevent her from abusing the competition for her own selfish ends. Throughout the tournament, Reimi is stalked by Saki Shindou, a sadistic killer hired by Miranda to take part in the tournament in exchange for being allowed to kill Reimi.

Reimi encounters Tamao Mitsurugi, a young girl with extraordinary powers rivalling her own and Yuka's during the tournament's semifinal rounds. Tamao manages to defeat Reimi and subsequently, Saki. However, Saki still pursues Reimi for an unknown reason and the two fight, with Reimi as the victor. Following this, Reimi has Kaori hack into the Jahana Group's systems and remove all of her mother's influence from the company, effectively foiling her plot to use the group's funds to create more hybrids. Reimi, alongside her father appears to Miranda over a video monitor following the Jahana matriarch's defeat at the hands of Yuka and Tamao in order to inform her that she cannot simply do as she pleases any more.

Although Miranda attempts to escape in a private jet, Reimi, arriving on the scene with Kaori, Jun Kubota, and Yuka's friend Satomi Yajima, combine their powers together to form a massive ki blast which destroys Miranda's jet, as well as Miranda herself.

[edit] Other Appearances

In V.G. II: Bout of Cabalistic Goddess, Reimi is invited to fight in a new tournament by her childhood rival, Kotoe Kashima, who hopes to prove once and for all that she is superior in every way to the Jahana heiress. This game would later be rendered non-canon according to the series' timeline.

Reimi also appears as a playable character (And also usually the final boss) in Super V.G., V.G. Custom, and V.G. Max, which all exist outside of series canon.

[edit] Anime

Reimi also appears in a three-part OVA series based on the games. As in the games, she is largely the head of the Jahana group and the champion of V.G., having won the previous tournament. She is voiced in this appearance by Yuriko Yamaguchi.

Reimi is first seen shortly after a fight which Kaori has won. When Kaori's defeated opponent attempts to flee instead of stripping, Reimi enforces the rules by having a pair of her subordinates restrain the girl and force her to inhale a kind of mind-altering drug which causes her to tear off her clothing and fondle herself in front of the gathered audience. Kaori recalls how Reimi had done the same thing to her the previous year and swears to dethrone the reigning champion. Reimi laughs and teases Kaori by stating that she can't wait to see how her body has "Improved" since the previous year.

Following this, Reimi is approached by Damien, a member of a secret division of the Jahana group which even she does not have jurisdiction over due to a clause in her deceased mother's will. Damien asks Reimi to allow Satomi Yajima into the V.G. tournament as a late entry. At first, Reimi flat out refuses, but when Damien remarks that Satomi may be stronger than Reimi herself, she seems to consider allowing the last minute entry. However, when she asks Damien if entering V.G. is what Satomi wants for herself, he implies that he would use force to make her enter if not, which prompts Reimi to slap him. Regardless, Satomi enters the competition in order to save her brother from a terminal illness, which unknown to her or Reimi, was worsened due to Damien's influence.

Driving home from the colisseum where Kaori's bout took place, Reimi and her assistant and lover, Washio, are reviewing the statistics of the competing waitresses. Shortly after watching a replay of Yuka's bout against Jun Kubota, Reimi's car comes up behind a motorcycle on the highway, which Jun is driving and Yuka is a passenger on. Sensing each other's respective spiritual powers, Yuka is driven by instinct to leap from the back of Jun's bike to attempt an attack on Reimi, which she easily deflects.

The next day, following a meeting of Jahana representatives from across Japan, Reimi takes Washio to the Jahana building's rooftop garden. As she engages in a moment of intimacy with him, Chiho Masuda, who had infiltrated the building as part of her mission to investigate V.G. and subsequently been detected and forced to flee the building guards, stumbles upon them.

Chiho calls out Reimi's name in surprise, alerting her to the ninja's presence. A brief altercation ensues, during which Reimi fires off wave after wave of energy attacks, only to have Chiho barely evade them. Reimi eventually catches Chiho off guard by launching a piller of energy which she can control mentally, thus attacking Chiho from behind when the ninja thinks she has dodged it. Chiho stumbles to her feet, desperate to win at any cost. This causes Reimi to remember how she would do the same during her childhood, when her mother trained her in the martial arts and would whip and beat her if she ever faltered. The momentary lapse in Reimi's concentration allows Chiho to escape by crashing through a nearby skylight, although she is eventually captured and brainwashed by Damien.

The next morning, Reimi visits her mother's grave, and sensing that something is wrong, hurries back to the V.G. colisseum, where Kaori has just been beaten in an unofficial bout against Satomi. Making her entrance by crashing her sports car through a window, Reimi attempts to defeat Satomi, and at first seems to be more than up to the task. However, Satomi is linked to a device which is forcing Miranda's spirit into her body, and Miranda is able to mentally activate a device that she had implanted in Reimi's body years earlier. A number of giant rose vines sprout from Reimi's body, entrapping her. She is then captured and moved into a basement laboratory, where she is used as a kind of energy battery to reinforce the Satomi-Miranda entity's abilities.

After Yuka frees Satomi from Miranda's influence and the two force her spirit back into its interim container, a white rose, Washio rescues Reimi, who promptly destroys the rose. They then join Kaori, Chiho, Jun, and Manami Kusunoki in watching Yuka and Satomi fight the final battle of the V.G. tournament atop the colisseum, which is now engulfed in flames. As the fight is about to begin, Reimi states to Washio that the sight she finds to be most beautiful is a battle between Goddesses.

[edit] Trivia

  • Reimi's relationship with Yuka parallels other famous fighting game rivalries, such as those between Ryu and Sagat, Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, and Haohmaru and Genjuro Kibagami.
  • Reimi's symbol is a red rose. In the original V.G. game she is forced to wrap herself in thorny rose vines while nude during her humiliation sequence.
  • In the latest game, V.G. Neo, there is a character named Kisara Torishiba who is a former fighter and senior to Neo newcomer Ayumi Okamoto who bears more than a passing resemblance to Reimi. During the ending of the game's backstory mode, the two spar and Kisara launches a Burning Rose attack at Ayumi, proving that she is indeed the legendary V.G. fighter, Reimi Jahana.[1][2]
