Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold

The Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold was a republican defense force in Germany set up in 1924. In the words of Nicholls 1979, pp91-92:

"The Reichsbanner... quickly mushroomed to success. Social Democratic Party locals formed the basis for it's success but non-socialists were also encouraged to join. Within a year, the Reichsbanner could claim over a million members and had become the most successful paramilitary formation in Germany. It's demonstrations and propaganda reached the remotest parts of the country,teaching the population to celebrate the foundation of their new Republic, honour its flag and constitution."

The organization was banned in 1933, after the Nazis came to power. .
