"Regulate" is a 1994 song performed by Warren G. and Nate Dogg. Released in the summer of 1994, the track appears on the soundtrack to the film Above the Rim and later Warren G.'s album Regulate...G Funk Era. Supported by heavy radio airplay and MTV, the song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is considered the breakout single for both artists. The music samples "Sign of the Times" by Bob James and Michael McDonald's hit "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)", and also features dialogue spoken by Casey Siemaszko's character in the 1988 film Young Guns.
The song tells a story in which Warren G., while looking for some "skirts" (women), is mugged in Long Beach, California. Nate Dogg is trying to find Warren G. at the same time, and when he finds that Warren G. is getting mugged, he kills the people mugging him. The two then look for women together, whom they eventually find.
The term regulate means to lay down the law by using force, or to return things to their normal status. The goal of a regulator is to eliminate an overly dramatic or dangerous situation. The song popularized the term "Regulators! mount up" which is now often said by Dog the Bounty Hunter, which is a line taken from the movie Young Guns (the first 3 lines heard in the song are sampled from the movie).
The music video featured scenes from the movie Above the Rim including an appearance by star rapper Tupac Shakur.
The writing of the song forms the basis for the episode "I Keep Forgettin'" of the spoof show Yacht Rock.
