Reginald Stephey is a convicted drunk driver who crashed into another vehicle, killed two people, and caused a fire in the other car where Jacqueline Saburido was subjected to 3rd-degree burns to 60% of her body. In 2001 he was convicted of intoxication manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years and a US$20,000 fine.
Stephey had been drinking and partying on the night of the September 18, 1999. Early the next morning he decided to drive home from his friends and on a road he veered into the path of another car with five occupants; killing two and injuring two of the other passengers. The fifth passenger Jacqueline Saburido was pinned into her seat, and was burned on 60% of her body for 45 seconds when the car caught fire.
Saburido has permitted her story to be used to discourage and campaign against drunk driving, and has appeared in an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The case has received a lot of media attention worldwide, due to the severe burns scars endured by the victim, and that she and Stephey have somewhat reconciled.
