Refreshment Sunday

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Refreshment Sunday is the fourth Sunday in Lent, also called Mothering Sunday, Mother's Day, Rose Sunday, and Laetare Sunday. The name "Refreshment Sunday" refers to the relaxation or breaking of one's Lenten fast on this day.

Some traditions, notably those who also fast during Advent also refer to Gaudete Sunday in Advent as a refreshment Sunday.

On both Refreshment Sundays, the liturgical colours of the season are replaced with rose. Where Churches celebrate the Advent use, the third candle in the Advent Wreath is also rose instead of purple.
