IMDb profile

Reflections in a Golden Eye is a 1967 film directed by John Huston based on the 1941 novel of the same name by Carson McCullers that deals with the theme of repressed homosexuality. The film starred Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Julie Harris.

It is a tale of six central characters, their failures, obsessions and darkest desires. Set in a military camp, it tells the story of Captain Weldon Penderton and his nymphomaniac wife Leonora. Other central characters are Major Morris Langdon and his sick wife Alison, the Langdon's houseboy Anacleto and a mysterious soldier, Private Williams.

Originally to have starred Montgomery Clift, Clift died of a heart attack (related to his years of alcohol and substance abuse) before cinematography commenced on the film. The role subsequently went to Brando.

[edit] Plot summary

The story begins at an Army base in the 1940's. Capt. Penderton assigns Pvt. Williams to stable duty. However, Williams has strange fantasies, and is given to riding the horses in the nude.

Penderton and his wife, Leonora are having marital troubles. During one of their many arguments she actually strips and hits her husband, enraging him. Williams, who is a voyeur, sees this and is attracted to Leonora. He goes as far as to invade her bedroom and caress her undergarments.

Leonora takes the time to visit Alison Langdon, the wife of neighbor and friend Maj. Langdon. She is recovering from having sliced off her nipples with a pair of pruning shears, the apparent result of depression following a miscarriage. Alison seems to be losing her mind, and eventually kills herself.

One day while out riding, Capt. and Mrs. Penderton see Williams riding in the nude. Furious, Capt. Penderton rides after him, and falls into a blackberry bush. He comes to the realization, much to his horror, that he is physically attracted to Williams. Following this, he and Leonora argue again, pushing them further from each other.

Capt. Penderton has a meltdown during a lecture on leadership. He resolves to do something about Williams, unaware of the private's attraction to Leonora. He follows Williams as he enters the Penderton's home, and seeing Williams entering the bedroom (and apparently furious that Williams is attracted to Leonora and not him) he shoots Williams dead, waking Leonora and badly frightening her.
