Talk:Redondo Union High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Are half of the people on the Notable Alumni list even significant enough to be on that list? And is there evidence for all the people on there that they attended this high school?

- You're right several people who were listed aren't actually alumni. I removed some of the obviously false ones (L. Ron Hubbard for example) but I didn't have time to check all the others.

[edit] Someone still is deleting the Traci Lords reference...
23:52, 4 September 2006

- Not sure who deleted the Traci Lords reference, but that was pretty stupid. I'm an alumni 80-84 and I remember her and she is in my yearbook. Just because it doesn't match the nice advertisement some people have put together doesn't mean it gets deleted. That is really against the spirit of the Wikipedia...

- That someone would be me, please WP:CITE a reliable source for this, or it will continue to be removed as per our strict WP:BLP policy. Thanks, Can't sleep, clown will eat me 05:26, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

- I realize that this may cause some dismay to some alumni, but I am a 1984 alumni and she was in one of my classes and is in my yearbook - 1983, volume 67, page 214 & 1984, volume 68 page 192. Nora Kuzma. Any simple search of internet bios will also provide multiple citations as to her stint at RUHS. The WP:CITE requirement seems to be a stubborness on your part to have this widely known info shown. It doesn't black-eye the school at all - I even taught there as a substitute teacher from 1989 through 1991. Annihilating the small-minded 09:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

- I also object to your PC re-wording of "infamous porn star" to "American Actress". Your white-washing for the entry really does a disservice to Wikipedia. I see "Reknowned Opera Singer" as a descriptive for another entry, why you feel the need to police the descriptions is beyond me. Annihilating the small-minded 09:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

- Now it's been deleted again... Assuming it it is the same user, who are you - Can't sleep, clown will eat me - that you decide who can and can't be listed in this article? Why you bother participating in the Wiki environment boggles my mind when you have nothing of the spirit that caused this to be founded? Annihilating the small-minded 09:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about "American Actress" necessarily -- her infamy comes from the fact that she had INTENT to go into the adult film industry while still illegal, then revealed that after she had only released 1 film of age and under a new production company which entitled her to majority of the profits. So, after building a name for herself she got all but 1 vid pulled... thus not an "infamous" porn star or an "actress" necessarily. I suggest "Adult Film Actress / Entrepeneur" or something to that effect. If you're worried about it being a "black-eye" for the school stop -- i love my alma matter but this school's got enough stuff going on now that overshadows this tidbit for sure 72.67.225.200 04:27, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Jake Israel 2005
[edit] JROTC
I didn't see anything about Redondo's MCJROTC program... many students commit long hours before and after school to staff meetings, Drill Team, Color Guard, Marksmanship, leadership, etc. etc. Also, Redondo's MCJROTC has contibuted countless hours to civic service. I'd like to see something something posted, even if it's just a couple sentences.

[edit] Churn
There seems to be a lot of churn on this page lately, most of it due to the edits of about 3 people. Could the parties in question stop by here and explain some of their edits? As an RUHS alum, it disturbs me that people seem to be battling over massive chunks of the page... there's really no good reason for people to remove huge chunks of each other's contributions without at least giving a reason here (on the talk page). Thanks! User:Glenn Willen (Talk) 01:49, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- Not sure about large chunks, but my simple one line addition to notable alumni of Traci Lords keeps getting deleted by "Can't sleep, clown will eat me". I'm an '84 Grad and attended with her, I have the yearbooks... See discussion above, where I've gotten pretty heated about the continued deletion. In her opinion, which isn't listed here, she seems to think only people who, and I quote "have done something positive/useful with their lives" should be listed there. Wikipedia is not an ad for RUHS and no one is not going to let their child attend because Traci Lords attended in the early eighties. It's fairly absurd, but my natural stubborness keeps me coming back to add the notation again and again. 12:51, 11 November 2006
[edit] Marxism Club Controversy
In the fall of 2006 a club was requested called the Marxism Club. The club president's (Thomas Sumner) draft of the constitution was denied by the school's Associated Student Body, as it was apparently "too controversial."
The constitution of the club stated that the club's main purpose was "to read the Communist Manifesto and better understand the ideas of Marxism." Sumner argued the purpose of the club was only to better understand Communism saying "[it] is such a large part of American history, our fight with Russia, and since our parents were only given propaganda about Marxism, it seems important that our generation step-up to understand the ideas of Communism. I believe Communism is a perfect government only in theory, but sadly mankind will probably never evolve to a point where Communism will be possible. I have no desire to advocate the replacement of Democracy with Communism."
Sumner pushed that since the club was a political-centered organization, it could not be denied without better reason. The school administration pushed the A.S.B. to put the club's status on hiatus until the legislator was looked into. The administration found that the club was in violation of CALIFORNIA EDUCATION CODE SECTION 51530, stating:
No teacher giving instruction in any school, or on any property belonging to any agencies included in the public school system, shall advocate or teach communism with the intent to indoctrinate or to inculcate in the mind of any pupil a preference for communism. In prohibiting the advocacy or teaching of communism with the intent of indoctrinating or inculcating a preference in the mind of any pupil for such doctrine, the Legislature does not intend to prevent the teaching of the facts about communism. Rather, the Legislature intends to prevent the advocacy of, or inculcation and indoctrination into, communism as is hereinafter defined, for the purpose of undermining patriotism for, and the belief in, the government of the United States and of this state. For the purposes of this section, communism is a political theory that the presently existing form of government of the United States or of this state should be changed, by force, violence, or other unconstitutional means, to a totalitarian dictatorship which is based on the principles of communism as expounded by Marx, Lenin, and Stalin.
The school's newspaper wrote an editorial arguing that the club should be allowed, since the code was outdated and was passed during the Red Scare. Though Sumner was an editor on the newspaper, the editorial board voted unanimously in support of the article.
Fearing legal actions against the school and possibly himself, Sumner withdrew the request after a meeting with Co-Principal Mary Little. Sumner plans on creating the club under the name "Political Reading Club" in the Spring of 2007.
The state never got involved with the issue.
[edit] Rant-ish thing moved from article.
Recently mentioned in the school newspaper was the fact that Ms. Rodriguez recently decided to weight the G.P.A.'s of those taking Honors Courses. THIS IS NEW THIS YEAR AND IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND REDONDO CURRENTLY STOP POSTING INFORMATION ON A SUBJECT YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT!

[edit] Faculty listing
I jsut deleted the faculty section. Please consult WP:SCH#WNTI, which is a guide from the Wikischools Project as to what not include in articles about schools. In short, lists of faculty (including direct links to a list/extensions, counselors, etc are not good ideas. The principal is noted in the infobox, and the school website is there as a link to more up-to-date information. Keep in mind, this is an encyclopedia article, not the school home page. Best of luck editing! LonelyBeacon (talk) 17:50, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
