Talk:Red box (phreaking)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Red boxing still works in western nations for the purpose of local calls only. The trick is to phone an operator, tell her to dial the number for you, then play her the tones. She will most likley accept them and let the call go through. More information on how phreaks can do this on newer (Canadian) phones is located at:

Note: It's not just for local calls:

[edit] first sentence

Is this sentence really needed? "Before cellular (radio) telephones became cheap and widely available, people who wanted to make telephone calls away from home used payphones. "

I don't think we are so advanced that there are people who need that explained to them.--Weirdal 22:57, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree with this. But then again, Wikipedia always does ecksplain way more than needed --207.22.49.218 04:46, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] disambiguation

in this edit, User:Saintrain removed the disambiguation link, which seems both appropriate and important. I'm adding it back in, but if you feel it doesn't belong, feel free to remove it again, but please leave a comment as to why. – Fʀɪɺøʟɛ ( тɐʟк¢ʘи†ʀ¡βs ) 14:14, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

!Hola! I disambiguated "red box", (and [[red box (disambiguation)]] is just a redirect to red box which is the real disambig page now), and Red box (phreaking) was the last page refering to [[red box (disambiguation)]], and I figured if someone had gotten to red box (phreaking) they meant to(?).
I'll leave the link if you want it but remove the " (disambiguation)" Enjoy, --Saintrain 16:52, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah! Makes more sense now. sorry if I was a jerk about it. – Fʀɪɺøʟɛ ( тɐʟк¢ʘи†ʀ¡βs ) 01:45, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] crime

maybe a mention of what crime is being committed in these cases, and the consequences would be useful info

I created a new section and also added [citation needed] tags so hopefully someone can figure that out. I'd assume generally the act of making a phone call without paying for it, regardless of the means, is illegal I think the term might be 'toll fraud.'64.238.172.212 (talk)

[edit] NPOV

The first sentence in the article was very bias (anti-redbox) so I changed it and created a new section on legal issues.

FWIW if a redbox is illegal and a redbox is anything that can play sounds then the Wiki page with the redbox sound is an illegal red box as the article used to describe it before my edits.64.238.172.212 (talk)
