ReDeads are undead zombie-like creatures that first appear in the Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time. They attack by paralyzing their foes with their high-pitched scream and terrifying gaze, then grab onto the player, biting them, with the exception of ReDead Knights, who attack in a similar manner only using a massive, bandaged sword. They are arguably considered the most terrifying monsters in the Legend of Zelda. ReDeads are related to Gibdos.

[edit] Appearances

ReDeads have appeared in six video games. They appeared in four The Legend of Zelda games, as well as two games in the Super Smash Brothers series.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

ReDeads are depicted as brown, masked zombies. Their masks resemble Spooky Masks. They are first seen in then Ruined Marketplace, where many are roaming the town. They usually are sitting down holding their legs while moaing. Others are standing. ReDeads paralyze anyone who walks near with fear (interestingly, this paralysis does not work in the Ruined Marketplace). The screams they make while doing so sounds like a woman's. However, the paralysis can only be executed if Link faces the Redead. Also, they are very sluggish, and are fairly easy to slay. They appear in the Market, Ganondorf's Castle, the Graveyard, Royal Family's Tomb, Shadow Temple, and Kakariko Well. If one ReDead is killed while in a group, the other ReDeads will gather around it, completely ignoring Link. Then the fallen ReDead disappears. It is unknown what the standing ReDeads do to the fallen one, if they are mourning it's death or eating it,as upon gathering around the fallen ReDead, there is no further animation. They are vulnerable to light; The Sun's Song temporarily freezes them, while the Light Arrow destroys them in one hit.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

ReDeads in Majora's Mask are very similar to the last incarnation. However, this time they dance when the Captain's Hat, Garo's Mask or the Gibdo Mask is put on, completely ignoring passerby. In Ikana Castle, the ReDeads have many different types of dances. A Gossip Stone states that that the ReDeads in Ikana Castle were once part of a troupe of performers when they were alive, explaining their odd behavior. Also, if the player burns a Gibdo's gauze with a Fire Arrow, it reveals a ReDead.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker

ReDeads return in the Wind Waker. Since they do not wear masks, they were given scary facial features, including red, glowing eyes. Redeads are blue in color, and they have tribal marking on their bodies. ReDeads also have large, gold earrings. They no longer have a black circle for a mouth, but instead a full set of teeth and gums. ReDead screams now sound utterly inhuman. ReDeads attack in the same way as before, and the only difference is that they take one heart before releasing Link. ReDeads usually reside in coffins, but some sit on the ground. They can be defeated by light reflected from the Mirror Shield, four slashes from the Master Sword, bombs, and Light Arrows. Using the Hookshot is unwise because it brings the player right into the ReDead's grasp. Also, any Arrow but the Light Arrow do not harm them, as it will only raise it's head, then slowly lower it.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

ReDeads return as "ReDead Knights". They are bandaged, mummie-like enemies, unlike before. They wear ragged, torn, red cloaks and carry a large bandaged sword, much like themselves. ReDead Knights appear in the Arbiter's Grounds and the Cave of Ordeals. They attack slightly different than before. ReDead Knights still scream, but it sounds more like a low-pitched howl. They damage players with their massive swords, making them hard to approach. ReDead Knights can easily be defeated with the ball and chain or two bomb arrows. Wolf Link can target one and defeat one easily with a couple of bites. When defeated, a ReDead Knight will drop a Red Rupee, which equals 20 rupees. Interestingly, ReDead Knights in the Cave of Ordeals have armor on their necks. Because of their bandaged appearance, several fans mistook them for a related enemy, Gibdos.

[edit] Link's Crossbow Training

In Link's Crossbow Training, ReDead Knights reappear in a course based on the Arbiter's Grounds. Here, you have to shoot down many ReDead Knights at a time. When close, they attack in the same manner as before, depleting the player's points.

[edit] Non-Zelda Appearances

ReDeads have appeared in two of the Super Smash Bros. games.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, ReDeads appear in the Adventure Mode stage, Underground Maze, based of of The Legend of Zelda. They walk slowly across they platform they are on. If a ReDead spots the player, they will charge at the player with their arms up. If they player is touched by the ReDead, the ReDead will moan and then bite the player, inflicting little damage. The more damage the player has, the longer the ReDead will attack the player. Also, if the player is behind the ReDead, it will turn around. When hit, the ReDead will fall to the ground, and if attacked, it will flying off the screen. Also, ReDeads randomly appear in crates during a Melee match. There is also a ReDead trophy in the obtained through the Lottery or 1-Player Mode, and reads:

"Seven years after Ganondorf took control of Hyrule, ReDeads roamed the ruins of castle town, moaning. Link was shocked at the state of the town, and the apparent lack of survivors. He later learned that the townsfolks had evacuated to safety, and the ReDeads were magic animated into hideous humanoid shapes.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. Brawl
