Red Kola

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Red Kola is a carbonated soft drink made from fruit extracts including flavouring from the kola nut. The main manufacturer and supplier is Barr's with the other being Currie's (an Ayrshire based supplier from Dunn's Food and Drink).

As with other Barr's products, such as Irn Bru, it is widely sold throughout Scotland and can be purchased in various containers including returnable glass bottles (colloquial: Glass Cheque - Value 4Bob or 20pence Sterling). It is virtually impossible to find in English shops (ASDA supermarkets and some Cost Cutters stock it), though cans have been known. It is also somewhat mysteriously absent from AG Barr's product list on their website.

Ingredients - (Currie's Red Kola): Carbonated Water, Sugar, Tartaric Acid, Flavourings, Sweeteners (*Aspartame, Sodium Saccharin), Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Preservative (Sodium Benzoate), Colours (E104, E122)

[edit] Trivia

  • The product was celebrated in song by Scottish folk-punk outfit Nyah Fearties on the title track of the band's 1993 Red Kola EP.
  • Many other cola brands, including Coca-Cola, now use artificial flavourings rather than genuine kola nut extract.
