Red Herring Surf
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Red Herring Surf ("original Tassie surfwear") is a brand of surfwear in Tasmania, Australia. It is strongly involved in local youth culture, sponsoring a local band and taking part in surf events. Tasmanian surfer Bill Thwaites founded the company in 1971, originally naming his store Seaworld.[1] The store name was changed to its present form as more stores opened in the 1990s.[2] Red Herring Surf was the first surf store opened in Tasmania, and now has over fifty employees. Since beginning operation in Hobart in 1971, the company has expanded with six stores now open, within the cities of Burnie, Launceston, Clarence, Glenorchy, and Hobart.
The company is actively involved in organising skateboard parks across the state[3], supporting Youth Week, supporting the prevention of youth suicide[4][5][6], and delivering professional surfers and skaters to Tasmania. Red Herring Surf has a skate team that travels the state organising events and competitions. Red Herring Surf is currently owned and operated by Victor Tilley.[2]
