Red Green (character)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Red Green is a fictional character played by Steve Smith and is the main character on The Red Green Show, a Canadian television series. He is often the fast thinker that always comes up with a solution to a problem that is brought up by his nerdy nephew Harold Green (played by Patrick McKenna), as well as fixing and making things, rarely "successful", with "the handyman's secret weapon" (duct tape).

Smith originally created the character of Red Green for his 1979-1985 sketch comedy series Smith & Smith. The series was a parody of the long-running Canadian outdoors show The Red Fisher Show (1968-1989), starring B.H. "Red" Fisher, in which Red and his friends would show silent films of their fishing trips with commentary at "Scuttlebutt Lodge". The character also appeared in Me & Max and The Comedy Mill before becoming the focus of his own series.

Smith writes a syndicated newspaper column as Red.

[edit] Catchphrases

  • "Keep your stick on the ice." (Red Green's trade mark catchphrase which was always uttered at the end of The Red Green Show. It was originally used by him at the end of his sketch appearances on Smith & Smith, The Comedy Mill, and at the end of his recurring appearances on Me & Max. The term is a Canadian expression meaning "pay attention".)
  • "If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!"
  • "If it ain't broke, you're not trying!"
  • "If it ain't broke, too bad, don't total it!"
  • "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy." (Said upon the conclusion of the "Handyman's Corner" segment on The Red Green Show)
  • "Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together." (Said upon the end of the advice segment).
  • "It's not smart, or correct, but it's one of the things that makes us what we are." (Once said before episodes of The Red Green Show, where Red would describe something frowned upon that humans do, always related to the episode's plot.)
  • "Be the best you can be... considering." - Harold Green (Red Green's nephew)'s suggested motto for the Possum Lodge Olympics.
  • "The Handyman's Secret Weapon." (Refers to Duct Tape.)
  • Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati-A Latin phrase which means "If all else fails, play dead." Red and the others at Possum Lodge would state this pledge before a lodge meeting after doing an arm movement across their chests.
  • "I'm a man, but I can change...if I have to. I guess..."-A very popular quote that when first uttered, got the audience to erupt in cheers. Soon it became known as The Man's Prayer and said before every meeting. This quote became very popular, but when uttered in later (and nearly all) episodes, it only got a few chuckles out of the crowd, in the series finale, it is known as the The Revised Man's Prayer, consisting of:" I'm a man, and I changed...because I had to... oh well.
